Roland Jennings
Sir Roland Jennings (10 November 1894 – 5 December 1968) was a British chartered accountant and politician. Jennings was born in Sunderland, the son of Jane Hannah Jennings and Cornelius Jennings. He served with the Durham Light Infantry in the First World War. He was elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) for Sedgefield in County Durham at the 1931 general election, defeating the Labour Party MP John Herriotts. Jennings was defeated at the 1935 general election by Labour's John Leslie. Frederick Sykes
Air Vice Marshal Sir Frederick Hugh Sykes, (23 July 1877 – 30 September 1954) was a British military officer and politician. Sykes was a junior officer in the 15th Hussars before becoming interested in military aviation. He was the first Officer Commanding the Military Wing of the Royal Flying Corps before the First World War, and later served as the Flying Corps' Chief of Staff in France in 1914 and 1915. Later in the war, he served in the Royal Naval Air Service in the Eastern Mediterranean before returning to Great Britain where he worked to organise the Machine Gun Corps and manpower planning. In late 1917 and early 1918, Sykes was the deputy to General Wilson on the Supreme War Council and from April 1918 to early 1919 he served as the second Chief of the Air Staff. 1928 Sheffield Hallam By-election
The 1928 Sheffield Hallam by-election was held on 16 July 1928. The by-election was held due to the appointment of the incumbent Conservative MP, Frederick Sykes, as Governor of Bombay. It was won by the Conservative candidate Louis Smith. At the previous two general elections (1923 and 1924) the Conservative candidate had won the seat with majorities of over 6,000 votes. Result After winning the by-election, Smith successfully defended the seat at the following year's general election. On that occasion he won with an increased majority of 6,787 votes in a straight fight with a Labour candidate.
