Louis Belton
Louis J. Belton (30 November 1943 – 11 November 2023) was an Irish Fine Gael politician from Kenagh, County Longford, and the seventh member of the Belton family to be elected to the Oireachtas. Formerly a building society employee, Belton was a member of Longford County Council from 1979 to 1999. He was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1989 general election as Teachta Dála (TD) for the Longford–Westmeath constituency, but lost his seat at the 1992 general election when contesting the revised Longford–Roscommon constituency. However, he was then elected to the 20th Seanad Éireann in 1993, when he topped the poll for the Administrative Panel. He regained his Dáil seat at the 1997 general election but lost it again at the 2002 general election to Mae Sexton of the Progressive Democrats. He did not contest the 2007 general election. A Teachta Dála ( , ; plural ), abbreviated as TD (plural ''TDanna'' in Irish, TDs in English), is a member of Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament). It is the equivalent of terms such as ''Member of Parliament'' (MP) or '' Member of Congress'' used in other countries. The official translation of the term is "Deputy to the Dáil", although a more literal translation is "Assembly Delegate". Overview For electoral purposes, the Republic of Ireland is divided into areas known as constituencies, each of which elects three, four, or five TDs. Longford County Council ( ga, Comhairle Chontae an Longfoirt) is the authority responsible for local government in County Longford, Ireland. As a county council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, and environment. The council has 18 elected members. The 26th Dáil was elected at the 1989 general election on 15 June 1989 and met on 29 June 1989. The members of Dáil Éireann, the house of representatives of the Oireachtas (legislature) of Ireland, are known as TDs. 2007 Irish General Election
The 2007 Irish general election took place on Thursday, 24 May after the dissolution of the 29th Dáil by the President on 30 April, at the request of the Taoiseach. The general election took place in 43 parliamentary constituencies throughout Ireland for 166 seats in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of parliament, with a revision of constituencies since the last election under the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2005. While Fine Gael gained 20 seats, Fianna Fáil remained the largest party. The election was considered a success for Fianna Fáil; however, Fianna Fáil's junior coalition partners in the 29th Dáil, the Progressive Democrats, lost six of their eight seats. Progressive Democrats
The Progressive Democrats ( ga, An Páirtí Daonlathach, literally "The Democratic Party" ), commonly referred to as the PDs, was a conservative-liberal political party in the Republic of Ireland. Launched on 21 December 1985 by Desmond O'Malley and other politicians who had split from Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, the Progressive Democrats took liberal positions on divorce, contraception and other social issues. The party also supported economic liberalisation, advocating measures such as lower taxation, fiscal conservatism, privatisation and welfare reform.
