Louis-Pierre Gravel
Louis-Pierre Gravel was a French Canadian missionary and colonizer who founded the town of Gravelbourg in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was born in Stanfold (now called Princeville), Quebec on August 8, 1868, and was ordained as priest on August 28, 1892, after finishing his studies at seminaries in Trois-Rivières, Nicolet and Montreal, Quebec. After serving in parishes in New York City from 1892 to 1906, he was asked to found a French Canadian parish in the south-west of Saskatchewan. In 1906, he founded the town of Gravelbourg. Aiding him in his endeavors were five of his brothers, which included Henri and Maurice, both doctors; Alphonse and Emile, both lawyer; Guy, a pharmacist; plus a sister, Laurianne, the wife of Georges Hébert, also a lawyer. He persuaded many French Canadian Catholics to settle in the Gravelbourg, Lafleche, Mazenod, Meyronne bloc settlement. Princeville, Quebec
Princeville is a city in the Canadian province of Quebec, located in L'Érable Regional County Municipality in the Centre-du-Québec region. The population was 6,001 as of the Canada 2016 Census. History The county of Stanfold (Princeville) was created by Édouard Leclerc on July 9, 1807 when he established himself on lot 6, rang 12 in Princeville. A monument was erected in his honour on the east section of the 12th rang. Stanfold then had a new division that would become the village of Princeville in 1856. Thus two municipalities would now co-existed. On February 23, 2000, the municipalities of the city of Princeville and the parish of Princeville become one to form the new city of Princeville. Meyronne, Saskatchewan
Meyronne is a special service area in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. History Known history of the Wood Mountain area goes back to the trek by the NWMP in 1874 and the founding of the Wood Mountain Post that same year. Land in the area was opened for homesteading in 1908. When the railway went through in 1913, the settlement moved to its present site. It was reorganised from a village into a special service area on September 5, 2006. Persons of National Historic Significance (National Historic People) are people designated by the Canadian government as being nationally significant in the history of the country. Designations are made by the Minister of the Environment on the recommendation of the Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada. Approximately 70 nominations are submitted to the board each year. A person is eligible to be listed 25 years after death, but Prime Ministers may be designated any time after death. Parks Canada administers the program, and installs and maintains the federal plaques commonly erected to commemorate each person, usually placed at a site closely associated with them. Block Settlement
A block settlement (or bloc settlement) is a particular type of land distribution which allows settlers with the same ethnicity to form small colonies. This settlement type was used throughout western Canada between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some were planned and others were spontaneously created by the settlers themselves. As a legacy of the block settlements, the three Prairie Provinces have several regions where ancestries other than British are the largest, unlike the norm in surrounding regions. The policy of planned blocks was pursued primarily by Clifford Sifton during his time as Interior Minister of Canada. It was essentially a compromise position. Mazenod (, ) is a hamlet in the Rural Municipality of Sutton No. 103, Saskatchewan, Canada. It is part of a region of wider French Catholic settlement centered around the town of Gravelbourg. The hamlet bears the name of Father Eugène de Mazenod, founder of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, a religious order active in the settlement of Western Canada. The hamlet is located 93 km southwest of the City of Moose Jaw on highway 43.
