The 1911 election for Mayor of Los Angeles took place on October 31, 1911, with a run-off election on December 5, 1911. Incumbent George Alexander was re-elected for a second full term against Job Harriman. Municipal elections in California, including Mayor of Los Angeles, are officially nonpartisan; candidates' party affiliations do not appear on the ballot. Election Incumbent George Alexander had been elected in March 1909 and was now seeking a second term. He was challenged by Job Harriman, an ordained minister and Socialist, William C. Mushet, who ran in the previous election, Miles S. Gregory, a fellow Republican and Councilmember, and James O. Becker, a Socialist Labor candidate. George Alexander (Los Angeles Politician)
George Alexander (September 21, 1839 – August 2, 1923) was a political figure who, from 1909 to 1913, served as the 28th mayor of Los Angeles, California. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he moved with his parents to the United States at the age of 11. In 1862, during the second year of the Civil War, he married Annie Yeiser in Iowa and participated in combat after enlisting in the Iowa volunteers. After the war, he settled in the small Iowa city of Belle Plaine, and in 1870 started his own grain and feed business. In 1887, at the age of 48, Alexander moved west to Los Angeles and expanded his grain business. By 1892, he began his governmental career in the County Recorder's office. In 1901, he was elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and served until 1909. In 1909 he ran for mayor in an election against council member Fred C. Job Harriman
Job Harriman (January 15, 1861 – October 26, 1925) was an ordained minister who later became an agnostic and a socialist. In 1900, he ran for vice president of the United States along with Eugene Debs on the ticket of the Socialist Party of America. He later twice ran for mayor of Los Angeles, drawing considerable attention and support. He also founded a socialist utopian community called Llano del Rio in California, later relocated to Louisiana. Biography Early years Harriman was born on January 15, 1861, in Clinton County, Indiana. He lived on the family farm until he was 18.
