Viscount Simon
Viscount Simon, of Stackpole Elidor in the County of Pembroke, was a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 20 May 1940 for the Liberal politician Sir John Simon. He was Home Secretary from 1915 to 1916 and 1935 to 1937, Foreign Secretary from 1931 to 1935, Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1937 to 1940 and Lord Chancellor from 1940 to 1945. His second wife Kathleen was a noted campaigner against slavery and other forms of involuntary servitude worldwide, and against racial discrimination. John Simon, 1st Viscount Simon
John Allsebrook Simon, 1st Viscount Simon, (28 February 1873 – 11 January 1954), was a British politician who held senior Cabinet posts from the beginning of the First World War to the end of the Second World War. He is one of only three people to have served as Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer, the others being Rab Butler and James Callaghan. He also served as Lord Chancellor, the most senior position in the British legal system. Beginning his career as a Liberal (identified initially with the left wing but later with the right wing of the party), he joined the National Government in 1931, creating the Liberal National Party in the process. At the end of his career, he was essentially a Conservative. Jan David Simon, 3rd Viscount Simon (20 July 1940 – 15 August 2021), was a British hereditary peer and member of the House of Lords. Biography The son of the 2nd Viscount Simon, he was educated at Westminster School and at the School of Navigation, Southampton University. He was further educated at Sydney Technical College. Baron Simon of Wythenshawe, of Didsbury in the City of Manchester, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1947 for Ernest Simon, an industrialist and politician and his heirs male. He had previously served as a member of the Manchester City Council and as Lord Mayor of Manchester and is chiefly remembered for the slum clearances and housing projects he initiated in the city, notably the Wythenshawe estate. Ernest Emil Darwin Simon, 1st Baron Simon of Wythenshawe (9 October 1879 – 3 October 1960) was a British industrialist, politician and public servant. Lord Mayor of Manchester in 1921–1922, he was a member of parliament for two terms between 1923 and 1931 before being elevated to the peerage and serving as the Chairman of the BBC Board of Governors. Early life and family Simon was born in Didsbury, Manchester, as the eldest son of Henry Gustav Simon and Emily Stoehr. Roger Simon, 2nd Baron Simon of Wythenshawe (16 October 1913 – 14 October 2002) was a British solicitor and left wing journalist and political activist. He was one of the founders of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The elder son of Ernest, first Lord Simon and Shena, Lady Simon, he inherited the title on his father's death in 1960. Although he never renounced the title, he did not use it. David Alec Gwyn Simon, Baron Simon of Highbury (born 24 July 1939) is a British businessman. Simon was educated at Christ's Hospital in Horsham, West Sussex. He studied at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, graduating in 1961, and joined British Petroleum as a management trainee, becoming chief executive of BP Oil International in 1982, managing director of BP in 1985, chief executive from 1992 to 1995 and chairman from 1995 to 1997.
