Lord Lieutenant
A lord-lieutenant ( ) is the British monarch's personal representative in each lieutenancy area of the United Kingdom. Historically, each lieutenant was responsible for organising the county's militia. In 1871, the lieutenant's responsibility over the local militia was removed. However, it was not until 1921 that they formally lost the right to call upon able-bodied men to fight when needed. Lord-lieutenant is now an honorary titular position usually awarded to a retired notable person in the county. Origins England and Wales Lieutenants were first appointed to a number of English counties by King Henry VIII in the 1540s, when the military functions of the sheriffs were handed over to them. Each lieutenant raised and was responsible for the efficiency of the local militia units of his county, and afterwards of the yeomanry and volunteers. Henry Bruce, 1st Baron Aberdare
Henry Austin Bruce, 1st Baron Aberdare, (16 April 1815 – 25 February 1895), was a British Liberal Party politician, who served in government most notably as Home Secretary (1868–1873) and as Lord President of the Council. Background and education Henry Bruce was born at Duffryn, Aberdare, Glamorganshire, the son of John Bruce, a Glamorganshire landowner, and his first wife Sarah, daughter of Reverend Hugh Williams Austin. John Bruce's original family name was Knight, but on coming of age in 1805 he assumed the name of Bruce: his mother, through whom he inherited the Duffryn estate, was the daughter of William Bruce, high sheriff of Glamorganshire. Cennydd George Traherne
Sir Cennydd George Traherne (14 December 1910 – 26 January 1995) was a notable Welsh landowner. Sir Cennydd was born at Coedarhydyglyn near Cardiff, and was educated at Wellington College and Brasenose College, Oxford. He owned Dyffryn House in Glamorgan, among other properties, but in 1939 he leased it to the local authority. After distinguished service in World War II, he went into politics, but failed to be elected in 1945 as MP for the Pontypridd constituency. He was made a Knight of the Garter in 1970. His appointment was the 941st appointment to the Order of the Garter since its creation in 1348. He was Lord Lieutenant of Glamorgan from 1952 until 1974 when, on the splitting of the lieutenancy, he became Lord Lieutenant of South, Mid and West Glamorgan with a lieutenant serving under him for each. Ivor Miles Windsor-Clive, 2nd Earl of Plymouth GCStJ, PC (4 February 1889 – 1 October 1943) was an English nobleman and Conservative Party politician. Early life Ivor was born on 4 February 1889. He was the second, and only surviving, son of the Alberta Victoria Sarah Caroline (née Paget) Windsor-Clive and Robert Windsor-Clive, 1st Earl of Plymouth (1857–1923). He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. Until succeeding his father in 1923, he used his father's subsidiary title Viscount Windsor. His paternal grandfather was Robert Windsor-Clive, himself the son of Harriet Windsor-Clive, 13th Baroness Windsor.
