This is a listing of all the animated shorts released by Warner Bros. under the ''Looney Tunes'' and ''Merrie Melodies'' banners between 1940 and 1949. A total of 307 shorts were released during the 1940s. 1940 1941 1942 This year marks the beginning of production of color Looney Tunes. For this year and the next, most would still be in black and white. 1943 The Blue Ribbon ''Merrie Melodies'' re-release program starts this year. Previous color ''Merrie Melodies'' shorts would be re-released with the original credits cut. In addition, four more ''Looney Tunes'' shorts were produced in 3-hue Technicolor. The series would go into full color the following year. 1944 From this year onward, all cartoons are under copyright and in 3-hue Technicolor. Busy Bakers is a 1940 Warner Bros. '' Merrie Melodies'' cartoon directed by Ben Hardaway and Cal Dalton. The short was released on February 10, 1940. Plot The local town baker faces going out of business, so an old man decides to help him stay in business after a kind deed offered to him by the baker. He then decides to go into business with the old man. Happy Rabbit
The character that would evolve into Bugs Bunny appeared in four cartoon shorts before his first official appearance in Tex Avery's ''A Wild Hare''. While this early version is commonly referred to as "Happy Rabbit", animation historian David Gerstein disputes this, saying that the only usage of the term was from Mel Blanc himself; the name "Bugs Bunny" was used as early as April 1938, from a model sheet made by Charles Thorson which was used for the short ''Hare-um Scare-um''. Bugs was also mentioned by name from an August 1939 review of the short in the Motion Picture Herald. Several published first person accounts, encyclopedic references, and Warner Bros.' own published material describe the inception of the name and of the character. Elmer's Candid Camera
''Elmer's Candid Camera'' is a 1940 Warner Bros. ''Merrie Melodies'' cartoon short directed by Chuck Jones. The short was released on March 2, 1940, and features Elmer Fudd and an early Bugs Bunny prototype. This is the first appearance of a redesigned Elmer Fudd, a character previously known as "Elmer" on the Lobby cards for The Isle of Pingo Pongo (1938) and Cinderella Meets Fella (1938), and even on screen in A Feud There Was (1938) and was also referred to as "Egghead's Brother" on the Vitaphone Publicity sheet for "Cinderella Meets Fella" (1938) which was shown on Michael Barrier'website(and now voiced by Arthur Q. Bryan). It s also the fourth appearance of the prototype rabbit that would later evolve into Bugs Bunny. Ali-Baba Bound
''Ali-Baba Bound'' is a 1940 Warner Bros. ''Looney Tunes'' cartoon directed by Bob Clampett. The short was released on February 10, 1940, and stars Porky Pig. The title is a spoof of the song ''I'm Alabama Bound''. Plot In the Sahara Desert, where it is so hot even the fan dancers use electric fans, Porky Pig is in the French Foreign Legion. While leaving a restaurant (known as the Brown Turban) he gets a message from a spy named Tattle Tale Gray that Ali-Baba and his dirty sleeves are going to attack a Beau Geste type desert fort. Porky is given the task of getting there before the bombing begins. He goes to U-Drive Rent-a-Camel and rents Baby Dumpling the camel, voiced by Dicky Jones, then races off in order to get to the fort. He gets there, only to discover that all the Legionnaires have gone to the Legion convention in Boston.
