Longview–Marshall Combined Statistical Area
The Longview–Marshall Combined Statistical Area covers four counties in Northeast Texas. The statistical area consists of the Longview Metropolitan Statistical Area and the Marshall Micropolitan Statistical Area. Prior to 2003, the area was known as the Longview–Marshall Metropolitan Statistical Area, which consisted of Gregg, Harrison, Rusk, and Upshur counties. As of the 2000 census, the CSA had a population of 256,152 (though a July 1, 2009 estimate placed the population at 271,669). Hallsville, Texas
Hallsville is a city in Harrison County, Texas, Harrison County, Texas, United States, located west of the county seat, Marshall, Texas, Marshall, on U.S. Highway 80. The population was 3,577 at the 2010 census, up from 2,772 at the 2000 census. The 2020 census revealed that Hallsville's population was 4,277. History Past The area was first settled in 1839, when Fort Crawford was built one mile west of the site of present Hallsville by W. C. Crawford as a protection against Indians. In 1849 the fort is reported to have had a post office and a two-story building that served as church, Masonic hall, and school (the only school in western Harrison County until 1868). In 1869, when an independent Southern Pacific Railway crossed a mile north of Fort Crawford, the settlers moved to the railroad and named the new settlement for a railroad official. Reklaw, Texas
Reklaw is a city in Cherokee and Rusk counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 379 at the 2010 census. History The town is named for Margaret Walker, who donated the land for the townsite, but since a Walker, Texas already existed elsewhere, the town simply spelled her name backwards. Similarly, the nearby town of Sacul was also named with a spelling reversal. Geography Reklaw is located at (31.861944, –94.984965). New London is a city in Rusk County, Texas, United States. The population was 958 at the 2020 census. New London was originally known as just "London". Because Kimble County Texas had already established a US Post Office station named London, the town changed its name to "New London" in 1931. History On March 18, 1937, the London School Explosion killed 294 people (most were children). As a result of the disaster, Texas passed laws requiring natural gas to be mixed with a malodorant to provide early warning of any leak. Other states quickly followed. Mount Enterprise, Texas
Mount Enterprise is a city in Rusk County, Texas, United States. The population was 447 at the 2010 census. History The city of Mount Enterprise, located south of Henderson in rural Rusk County, was named for a small elevation near the town and for the business enterprise of the Vinzent brothers, who settled it in 1832. The town owes its existence to the presence of promising iron ore in the area. Charles Vinzent considered the "old mountain" nearby to be an "iron mountain," and he was not far off the mark; the brown, crumbly ore of the Weches formation that outcrops in the area has a better than 50 percent iron content. However, Vinzent's real enterprise came in the form of manufacturing and retailing. His factory made wagons, buggies, furniture, plows, caskets, and a patented churn. Clarksville City, Texas
Clarksville City is a city in Gregg County, Texas, Gregg and Upshur County, Texas, Upshur counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 780 at the 2020 United States census, 2020 census. History The first settlers arrived in the area before 1845. There was a stagecoach stop at the home of William W. Walters, which was later owned and operated by Warren P. Victory. White Oak, Texas
White Oak is a city in Gregg County, Texas, United States. It was incorporated in 1960. The population was 6,225 as of 2020. History In the late 1800s White Oak was a small farming community with three sawmills located on thick forested land. By 1884, there were 15 families living in the area and either working at the large sawmills or farming the land. A small school was built near Hawkins Creek which doubled as a church. The school burned to the ground in 1885 due to suspected arson. A new school was established in 1887. Local land owners, Andrew J. Tuttle and his father-in-law, John Bumpus, gathered a group of men in the area to erect a new school. Mr. Tuttle's uncle, Pleas Harris, and Kaleb Bumpus donated ground near a spring on which to build the new school.
