Longford GAA
The Longford County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ( ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael Coiste Chontae an Longfort) or Longford GAA is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland, and is responsible for Gaelic games in County Longford. The county board is also responsible for the Longford county teams. The county football team won its only National Football League title in 1966 with a one-point victory over Galway in the Home Final and an aggregate win over New York in the Final. The team won its only Leinster Senior Football Championship title in 1968, with a 3-9 to 1-4 win over Laois. Clubs The county board oversees 21 active adult Gaelic football clubs. Pearse Park (Longford)
Pearse Park is a GAA stadium in Longford, County Longford, Republic of Ireland. It is the main grounds of Longford's Gaelic football and hurling teams. In 2012, the stadium was renamed Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, due to sponsorship with Glennon Brothers, a local timber firm. The ground originally had a capacity of 18,000, however in November 2011, this was cut to 8,000 for health and safety reasons. History The grounds were formerly named Longford Park. Longford first started playing at Longford Park in 1937. The ground was later renamed Pearse Park after Patrick Pearse who had been executed during the Easter Rising. On 4 June 2006, Dublin defeated Longford by two points at Pearse Park, the last time Dublin have played a Championship match away from Croke Park until they played Laois in Nowlan Park in 2016. Clonguish GAA
Clonguish GAA is a Gaelic football and hurling club in Newtownforbes, County Longford, Ireland. The club was formed on 20 October 1889 and was originally called Clonguish Gallowglasses. Situated in the west of Co. Longford, it is bordered by four parishes in Co. Longford, Drumlish, Killoe, Killashee and Templemichael (Longford) – the parish also shares a common boundary with the Province of Connacht in that it adjoins the parishes of Bornacoola and Gortletteragh in Co. Leitrim and Tarmonbarry in Co. Roscommon. The Irish for Clonguish is ''Cluain Geis'' which means 'The Meadow of the Swans'. Clonguish played their games at Curry Field in the Castleforbes Estate before moving to their new ground Centenary Park in 1984. Centenary Park is now called Bertie Allen Park after one of Clonguish's and Longford's most famous GAA men. All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship
The All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship was a hurling competition organized by the Gaelic Athletic Association in Ireland. The competition was originally contested by the second teams of the strong counties, and the first teams of the weaker counties. In the years from 1961 to 1973 and from 1997 until now, the strong counties have competed for the All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship instead. The competition was then restricted to the weaker counties. The competition was discontinued after 2004 as these counties now compete for the Nicky Rackard Cup instead. From 1974 to 1982, the original format of the competition was abandoned, and the competition was incorporated in Division 3 of the National Hurling League. Liam Griffin (hurler)
Liam Griffin (born 1945 or 1947 in Rosslare, County Wexford) is an Irish former hurler and manager. He played hurling at various times with his local clubs Rosslare and Newmarket-on Fergus with the Wexford and Clare senior inter-county teams in the 1960s. Griffin later served as manager of the Wexford senior inter-county team from in 1995 and 1996. Later he was instrumental on the Hurling Development Committee that established the Christy Ring Cup and Nicky Rackard Cup for weaker hurling counties. In 2009 he was named in the ''Sunday Tribune''s list of the ''125 Most Influential People In GAA History''. Biography Griffin was born in Rosslare, County Wexford in 1945 or 1947. His parents ran a guesthouse in the town before buying a small hotel nearby in the late 1950s. Griffin was educated locally and later worked in his parents’ hotel. The National Football League (NFL; ga, Sraith Náisiúnta Peile) is an annual Gaelic football competition between the senior county teams of Ireland plus London. Sponsored by Allianz, it is officially known as the Allianz National Football League. The Gaelic Athletic Association organises the league. The winning team receives the New Ireland Cup, presented by the New Ireland Assurance Company. The National Football League is the second most prestigious inter-county Gaelic Football competition after the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship. All-Ireland Senior Football Championship
The All-Ireland Senior Football Championship (SFC) ( ga, Craobh Shinsir Peile na hÉireann) is the premier competition in Gaelic football. An annual tournament organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), it is contested by the county teams in All-Ireland. The first tournament was held in 1887; it has been held every year since 1889. Each tournament ends with a final, played by the 35th Sunday of the year at Croke Park in Dublin, with the winning team receiving the Sam Maguire Cup. 1965–66 National Football League (Ireland)
The 1965–66 National Football League was the 35th staging of the National Football League (NFL), an annual Gaelic football tournament for the Gaelic Athletic Association county teams of Ireland. Longford won their first and (so far) only NFL title with wins over Galway in the "home" final and New York in the two-legged "World Championship." Leinster Senior Club Football Championship
The Leinster Senior Club Football Championship is an annual Gaelic football tournament played on a knockout basis between the senior club championship winners of the competing counties in Leinster. The current holders of the Leinster title are Ballyboden St. Enda's from Dublin. Offaly side Gracefield were the first winners of the Leinster senior club football championship in the 1970–71 season. The most successful clubs are St. Vincent's from Dublin and Portlaoise from Laois, who have won the Leinster championship on seven occasions. Carlow club Éire Óg won 5 championships in 7 years in the 1990s. Dublin clubs have won the Leinster championship twenty one times, which is more than double any other county. The Longford Senior Football Championship is an annual Gaelic Athletic Association competition organised by Longford GAA among the Senior grade Gaelic football clubs in County Longford, Ireland. Mullinalaghta St Columba's are a Gaelic football club based in Mullinalaghta, County Longford, Ireland. They are the 2021 Longford Senior Football Championship winners, having previously won the title in 1948, 1950, 2016, 2017 and 2018. On the 9th of December 2018, they became the first Longford club to win the Leinster Senior Club Football Championship.
