Long Beach Search and Rescue is a specialist Exploring (Learning for Life), Explorer post of the Learning for Life program with the Boy Scouts of America. It is an urban search and rescue unit based out of Long Beach, California, and is sponsored by the Long Beach Police Motor Patrol Association and Long Beach Firefighters' Associations. Long Beach Search and Rescue is designated by the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services as a Type II — Medium rescue resource, the only volunteer unit in the nation to receive this designation, which most professional fire departments do not have. Exploring (Learning For Life)
Exploring is an interactive, worksite-based career education program of Learning for Life, an affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America. Participants in the program are called ''Explorers''. The program serves youth in 6th-8th grades (Exploring clubs), and young men and women who are 14 through 20 years old (Exploring posts). Exploring units (clubs or posts), are sponsored by local businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations, and usually focus on a single career field, but can also introduce youth to a variety of career fields within a single unit. Prior to 1998, the Exploring program was the main BSA program for older youth and participants were called Explorer Scouts. Urban search and rescue (abbreviated as USAR or US&R) is a type of technical rescue operation that involves the location, extrication, and initial medical stabilization of victims trapped in an urban area, namely structural collapse due to natural disasters, war, terrorism or accidents, mines and collapsed trenches. The causes of USAR incidents can be categorised as accidental and deliberate. Structural collapse incidents can comprise unstable or collapsed structures in an unsafe position. Sylmar is a suburban neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley and is the northernmost neighborhood within the City of Los Angeles. Historically known for its profusion of sylvan olive orchards, Sylmar can trace its past to the 18th century and the founding of the San Fernando Mission.
