Local Government In Antigua And Barbuda
Administrative structures for municipal governments can be found on Antigua and Barbuda. It also has 17 district councils in addition to its workforce for the local government. Under the direction of the Local Government Officer, the district councils have been categorized into a total of four (4) distinct zones. At a more fundamental level, Voluntary Village Councils are strongly urged to encourage the participation of as many citizens as is humanly practicable. After that, they are consolidated into several district councils. The borders of national constituencies are mirrored in district council limits. The Barbuda Council is a local authority that manages the internal affairs on the island of Barbuda. History and electoral system The Barbuda Council was established in 1976 by the Barbuda Local Government Act. It is an 11-member body consisting of nine directly elected and two ''ex officio'' (Barbuda's House and Senate representatives in the national Parliament) members who serve four-year terms. 2023 Antiguan General Election
General elections were held in Antigua and Barbuda on 18 January 2023 to elect members of the House of Representatives. The Labour Party (ABLP) has held an absolute majority of 15 seats in the House of Representatives after the 2018 general election, with Gaston Browne remaining as prime minister. Browne initiated a constitutional referendum after the 2018 election, which was rejected by voters, and following the death of Elizabeth II in 2022, he announced his intention to organise a referendum for the transition of Antigua and Barbuda to a republican system. Besides ABLP, the United Progressive Party (UPP), Democratic National Alliance, Barbuda People's Movement (BPM), and three independent politicians filed candidacies for the 2023 general election.
