Livingstone, Canterbury
Livingstone is a small settlement in Otago part of Waitaki District, in the South Island of New Zealand. It is located northeast of Danseys Pass, some 30 kilometres northwest of Oamaru Oamaru (; mi, Te Oha-a-Maru) is the largest town in North Otago, in the South Island of New Zealand, it is the main town in the Waitaki District. It is south of Timaru and north of Dunedin on the Pacific coast; State Highway 1 and the railway .... It is located immediately north of the boundary to Otago regional administered area.. Originally named Ramsey, the name was changed to the current Livingstone in the 1870s. The settlement was home to the nearby Livingstone gold fields, which proved to be an uneconomic venture. Although gold was, and still is, found, the fine nature of its makeup proved to be hard to accumulate. The Livingstone gold company went broke in the 1920s. Waitaki District
Waitaki District is a territorial authority district that is located in the Canterbury and Otago regions of the South Island of New Zealand. It straddles the traditional border between the two regions, the Waitaki River, and its seat is Oamaru. Danseys Pass
Danseys Pass (often incorrectly referred to as ''Dansey's Pass'' or ''Dansey Pass'') (el. 935 m.) is a mountain pass located in the Kakanui Range in the South Island of New Zealand. The pass itself is located at the boundary of the Waitaki and the Central Otago districts. In this location, it is also the boundary between the Canterbury and Otago regions. The road lies between the Maniototo plain (part of the Taieri River water catchment) and the northern foothills of the Kakanui Mountains (part of the Waitaki River catchment). Much of the road going over Danseys Pass is unsealed and is occasionally cut directly from the Haast Schist bedrock. The road was built for the owners of large sheep runs, the brothers Allan McLean and John McLean. Though not a major arterial road, the pass is a fairly well-used link between the towns of Naseby and Ranfurly in the south and Duntroon, in North Otago.
