Live At The Lighthouse (Lee Morgan Album)
''Live at the Lighthouse'' is a live album by jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan, released on the Blue Note label in 1971. The album features a quintet of Morgan, Bennie Maupin, Harold Mabern, Jymie Merritt, and Mickey Roker, recorded at the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach, California in July 1970. ( Jack DeJohnette replaces Roker on drums on "Speedball".) Originally released as a double LP comprising four side-long recordings, the 1996 CD reissue expanded the track list with over one-hundred minutes of additional material from the Lighthouse gigs. In 2021, Blue Note released an 8-CD/12-LP box set featuring the complete recordings of Morgan's three-night stint to commemorate the original album's fiftieth anniversary. Recording of the album began on Morgan's 32nd birthday (July 10, 1970). Lee Morgan
Edward Lee Morgan (July 10, 1938 – February 19, 1972) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer. One of the key hard bop musicians of the 1960s, Morgan came to prominence in his late teens, recording on John Coltrane's '' Blue Train'' (1957) and with the band of drummer Art Blakey before launching a solo career. Morgan stayed with Blakey until 1961 and started to record as leader in the late '50s. His song "The Sidewinder", on the album of the same name, became a surprise crossover hit on the pop and R&B charts in 1964, while Morgan's subsequent recordings found him touching on other styles of music such as post-bop and avant-garde jazz as his artistry matured. Soon after ''The Sidewinder'' was released, Morgan rejoined Blakey for a short period. The Sidewinder (composition)
"The Sidewinder" is a composition by Lee Morgan. It was first recorded for Morgan's Blue Note album of the same name, on December 21, 1963, and has become a jazz standard.
