The song was inspired by Mann's own experience with a friend who was addicted to crack cocaine and suffered a number of post-treatment relapses. Mann said about the song's inspiration to ''Womanrock.com'' in 2005, "It was like a phone call I had with him, where he was out of treatment, in a half way house, and was super manic and you just know. He relapsed shortly after that." Critical reception In a review of ''The Forgotten Arm'', Patrick Berkery of ''The Philadelphia Inquirer'' described "Going Through the Motio ...

The id, ego, and super-ego are a set of three concepts in psychoanalytic theory describing distinct, interacting agents in the psychic apparatus (defined in Sigmund Freud's structural model of the psyche). The three agents are theoretical constructs that describe the activities and interactions of the mental life of a person. In the ego psychology model of the psyche, the id is the set of uncoordinated instinctual desires; the super-ego plays the critical and moralizing role; and the ego is the organized, realistic agent that mediates between the instinctual desires of the id and the critical super-ego; Freud explained that: The functional importance of the ego is manifested in the fact that, normally, control over the approaches to motility devolves upon it. Thus, in its relation to the id, he egois like a man on horseback, who has to hold in check the superior strength of the horse; with this difference, that the rider tries to do so with his own strength, while the ego us ...

Long Shot (Aimee Mann Song)
"Long Shot" is a song by American singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, which was released in 1996 as the third single from her second studio album '' I'm with Stupid''. The song was written by Mann and produced by Jon Brion. "Long Shot" peaked at No. 126 in the UK Singles Chart. Critical reception In a review of ''I'm with Stupid'', Melissa Ruggieri of the ''Sun-Sentinel'' noted the song "cruise along with Beatle-esque harmonies and simple riff". Dave Younk of the '' St. Cloud Times'' commented: "Too bad the lyrics on 'Long Shot' most likely will prohibit its radio release, because it is perfectly entrancing. The gritty guitar chord that drives the song provides the perfect backdrop to Mann's warm voice." Chuck Campbell of the Scripps Howard News Service described the song as "shuffling" with lyrics showing "Mann realizes she's been sucked in by a manipulator". Joe Konz of ''The Indianapolis Star'' considered the song both a "rocker" and "blistering epithet at manipulative types". Steph ...

That's Just What You Are
"That's Just What You Are" is a song by American singer-songwriter Aimee Mann, which was released in 1994 as a single from the soundtrack of ''Melrose Place''. It was also included on Mann's second studio album '' I'm with Stupid'' (1995). The song was written by Mann and Jon Brion, and produced by Mike Denneen. "That's Just What You Are" reached No. 93 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 and No. 24 on the ''Billboard'' Modern Rock Tracks charts. The song's music video was directed by David Hogan. Background "That's Just What You Are" was written by Mann and Jon Brion. Speaking of the inspiration behind the song, Mann told ''Billboard'' in 1994, "We were talking about people who act like jerks but insist that they can't change because that would somehow erode the integrity of their personality. Like that excuse, 'That's just how I am, man. If I changed, I wouldn't be myself.' Which is this annoying, '60s bullshit way of basically saying 'I have no intention of doing any work.' We both ha ...

The song was written by Mann and Jon Brion, and produced by Brion. "Stupid Thing" peaked at No. 47 in the UK Singles Chart and remained in the Top 100 for two weeks. Background Speaking of the song, Mann told Tony Clayton-Lea of the ''Sunday Tribune'' in 1993, "Most of 'Stupid Thing' comes from a particular relationship and the frustration someone would feel because they're stopping something before it's even started." Critical reception Tony Clayton-Lea of the ''Sunday Tribune'' commented that "Stupid Thing" was "about the way in which some relationships break apart before they've been given the chance to properly knit together". He added, "Mann matches the unfairness of the situation with an inherent hopelessness that is astoundingly accurate". In a review of ''Whatever'', Kara Manning of ''Rolling Stone'' noted the song "apt ...
