''Live at the Olympia '96'' is a live double album by British hard rock band Deep Purple. It was recorded at the Olympia in Paris on 17 June 1996 during the '' Purpendicular'' tour and released in 1997. Initial copies of the release have a round sticker on the front of the CD jewel-case, stating 'Official Bootleg'. It is one of only three Deep Purple live albums to feature a performance of "Maybe I'm a Leo", the others being '' Deep Purple in Concert'' and ''Live at Montreux 2011''. Deep Purple
Deep Purple are an English rock band formed in London in 1968. They are considered to be among the pioneers of heavy metal music, heavy metal and modern hard rock music, but their musical style has changed over the course of its existence. Originally formed as a psychedelic rock, psychedelic and progressive rock band, they shifted to a heavier sound with their 1970 album ''Deep Purple in Rock''. Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the "unholy trinity of British hard rock and heavy metal in the early to mid-seventies". Ian Gillan
Ian Gillan (born 19 August 1945) is a British singer who is best known as the lead singer and lyricist for the rock band Deep Purple. He is known for his powerful and wide-ranging singing voice. Initially influenced by Elvis Presley, Gillan started and fronted several local bands in the mid-1960s, and eventually joined Episode Six when their original singer left. He first found widespread commercial success after joining Deep Purple in 1969. He resigned from the band in June 1973, having given a lengthy notice period to their managers. After a short time away from the music business, he resumed his music career with solo bands the Ian Gillan Band and Gillan (band), Gillan, before a year-long stint as the vocalist for Black Sabbath in 1983. "When a Blind Man Cries" is a song by British rock band Deep Purple, originally only available as the B-side of the single " Never Before", released in 1972. It was recorded during the ''Machine Head'' sessions in December 1971. According to Ian Gillan, "It’s just an example, for example, if you think of the phrase 'if a blind man cries' then it's pretty sad, those who are disadvantaged tend to be less complaining than those who are able-bodied". Steve Morse
Steve J. Morse (born July 28, 1954) is an American guitarist, best known as the founder of the Dixie Dregs and as the lead guitarist of Deep Purple from 1994 to 2022. Morse has also enjoyed a successful solo career and was briefly a member of the group Kansas in the mid-1980s. Most recently, Morse became a member of the supergroup Flying Colors. Biography Early life Steve Morse was born in Hamilton, Ohio. His family soon moved to Tennessee and then to Ypsilanti, Michigan, where Morse spent his childhood. Although familiar with piano and clarinet, Morse ultimately became a guitarist. Morse worked briefly with his older brother Dave in a band called the Plague until the family moved to Augusta, Georgia. "Vavoom: Ted the Mechanic" is the first song on ''Purpendicular'', Deep Purple's first studio album featuring guitarist Steve Morse. The song is notable for its use of pinch harmonics. It remained as the first song in the band's live sets after the album's release so that Morse could start the show by playing the first notes of the new album. Vocalist Ian Gillan has stated that the lyrics are based on the true-life story of a man he once met in a pub during the recording sessions for the 1987 album ''The House of Blue Light''. The two started talking, and Gillan wrote down the man's story on some napkins which he then put away and forgot about. Background The song is one of several based on Ian Gillan's real life experiences: "She was a complete mystery to me. This is another tale of unrequited love", he explained. The song begins with the sound of an air conditioner being switched on, recorded by assistant engineer Mike Thorne. Roger Glover suggested to engineer Martin Birch that the sound of a machine starting up would be a good way to begin both the song and the album, but Birch could not think of anything available that would fit the purpose. Ian Paice
Ian Anderson Paice (born 29 June 1948) is an English musician, best known as the drummer and last remaining original member of the rock band Deep Purple. He is often cited as one of the greatest drummers of all-time. He remains the only member of Deep Purple who has served in every line-up since the band’s inception in 1968, as well as having played on every album and at every live appearance. Biography The early years Born in Nottingham before moving south in early childhood, Paice got his first drum kit at 15. He began his professional career in the early 1960s playing drums in his father's dance band. The first band he was in was called Georgie & the Rave-Ons, which after being renamed the Shindigs released their first single featuring the 17-year-old Paice and George Adams.
