Littell, Washington
Littell is an unincorporated community in Lewis County, Washington, United States, located off Washington State Route 6 between the towns of Adna and Claquato. The Willapa Hills Trail passes thru the area. History Two versions of who created the town exist. A manager of the Hill Logging Company, Harry J. Syverson, asserted in 1912 to have founded the town however there are sourced claims that a local businessman, Curt Littell, agreed to call the post office under his name in 1902. A post office was moved from the nearby town of Claquato in 1903 and an opera house was built in the town in 1904. A pedestrian bridge in Littell was built starting in 2021. The span would allow users of the Willapa Hills Trail to pass over the highway to lessen vehicular accidents. The $3.3 million project was completed in June 2023 and the overpass was named in honor of the community. Claquato Church
Claquato Church is a historic Methodist church located off Washington State Route 6 in Claquato, Washington. It is the oldest standing church building in the state of Washington. History Construction commenced in 1857 as a Presbyterian house of worship however the chapel was allowed to be consecrated the following year as Methodist with a promise that the church would be open to all denominations. The building was used as a schoolhouse, known locally as the "Claquato Academy", until a new school was built in 1874. When the county seat moved from Claquato to Chehalis in 1874, the church began to lose its congregants though services continued into the 1930s. A small renovation project, for repairs and the need for a new floor, was completed in 1929. The Salvation Army began services that same year. Roy Huggins (July 18, 1914 – April 3, 2002) was an American novelist and an influential writer/creator and producer of character-driven television series, including ''Maverick'', '' The Fugitive'', '' Hunter'', and ''The Rockford Files''. He became a noted writer and producer using his own name, but much of his later television scriptwriting was done using the pseudonyms Thomas Fitzroy, John Thomas James or John Francis O'Mara. Willapa Hills Trail
The Willapa Hills Trail is a intercounty rail trail in the U.S. state of Washington that is part of the Willapa Hills State Park. Following an east–west route alongside State Route 6, the tract links Chehalis and South Bend, traveling through or near several small towns and parks along the way. Overseen by the Washington State Park System, local cities and towns often maintain areas of the trail within their jurisdictions. The trail is built upon a decommissioned railroad track. Adna, Washington
Adna is an unincorporated community located in Lewis County, Washington. Etymology An early resident, J.G. Browning named the town "Willoway" for the saying "Where there's a will, there's a way", the favorite saying of his wife, Edna. In 1892, the town's name was changed by the railroad to Pamona to distinguish it from the Willapa townsite. However, the town was required to change the name again as another Pomona, Washington existed. Two different versions for arriving at the current, official name are recorded. Historical archives indicate that the moniker was chosen as "Edna", after Edna Browning, with the first letter subsequently changed because a post office, Edna, was already in use.
