Water Polo
Water polo is a competitive team sport played in water between two teams of seven players each. The game consists of four quarters in which the teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match. Each team is made up of six field players and one goalkeeper. Excluding the goalkeeper, players participate in both offensive and defensive roles. It is typically played in an all-deep pool where players cannot touch the bottom. A game consists mainly of the players swimming to move about the pool, treading water (mainly using the eggbeater kick), passing the ball, and shooting at the goal. Teamwork, tactical thinking and awareness are also highly important aspects. Water polo is a highly physical and demanding sport and has frequently been cited as one of the most difficult to play. Samir Barać
Samir Barać (born 2 November 1973 in Rijeka) is a Croatian water polo player who competed in the 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012 Summer Olympics. As team captain, he was part of the Croatian team that won the gold medal in 2012. He played for VK Primorje Rijeka, POŠK Split, HAVK Mladost Zagreb and Brescia. Hellen Boering
Heleen ("Hellen") Aafje Boering (born July 27, 1964 in Enschede, Overijssel) is a retired water polo goalkeeper from the Netherlands. She made her debut for the Women's National Team in 1984, and was on the squad that won the silver medal at the first official World Championship in women's water polo in 1986 (Madrid, Spain). Boering competed for her native country at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, finishing in fourth place. Her biggest success came in 1991, when the Dutch won the 1991 World Aquatics Championship, defeating Canada in the final. Alexander Boegschoten (born 15 July 1956 in Hilversum) is a former water polo player from the Netherlands, who won the bronze medal with the Dutch Men's Team at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Péter Biros
Péter Biros (born 5 April 1976) is a Hungarian former water polo player, who played on the gold medal squads at the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2004 Summer Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics, which makes him one of six male athletes who won three Olympic gold medals in water polo. ( Kiss Szecsi Molnar Kasas Benedek Biros) He also competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He is nicknamed ''Fácán'', meaning 'pheasant', and made his debut for the national side in 1997, during an international tournament in Seville, Spain. After the 2008 Olympics final, Biros revealed that he performed the entire tournament with a cyst by his heart, something that was unknown to the entire team and coaches alike. He insisted that he played with the consent of his doctors, and received a Fair Play award afterwards for it. Wouly De Bie
Wouly Sybrand de Bie (born 4 March 1958, in Beverwijk) is a former water polo goalkeeper from the Netherlands, who participated in two Summer Olympics. In 1980 he finished in sixth position with the Dutch team. Four years later in Los Angeles, De Bie once again gained the sixth spot in the final rankings with the Netherlands. De Bie was reckoned one of the best goalkeepers of the World in 1982, when he finished first during the Tungsram Cup in Budapest, Hungary, where the top ten teams of the World where present. Direct after that tournament he gained the fourth spot during the World Championships in Guayaquil, Ecuador. De Bie has over 30 years of experience as an international coach with Dutch, Kuwait, French and Venezuelan club teams, as well as national squads in Kuwait (men), New Zealand (men and women), Canada (women). Erik Bergqvist
Erik Gustaf "Berka" Bergqvist (20 June 1891 – 17 February 1954) was a Swedish water polo player and freestyle swimmer who competed in the 1912 and 1920 Summer Olympics, as well as an international footballer. He was part of the Swedish water polo teams that won silver and bronze medals, respectively. In 1912 he also competed in the 100 metre freestyle. As a swimmer and water polo player, he represented Stockholms KK. Besides water sports, Bergqvist won a Swedish football title with AIK as a goalkeeper. He also football played for IFK Stockholm. He was one of three founders of the company AB Tipstjänst, which in 1934 received the state license to organize gambling and betting in sport, as those were going out of control in the 1920s–30s. The company was nationalized in 1943, and Bergqvist was offered the post of its Director General, on condition that he joins the Swedish Social Democratic Party. Erik Bergvall
Erik Gustaf Bergvall (7 April 1880 – 4 February 1950) was a Swedish water polo player, journalist and sports official. He also promoted the Bergvall system, a variation of the traditional knockout tournament system which was used at the 1912, 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympics. Water polo player As a water polo player, Bergvall represented Sweden at the 1908 Summer Olympics and helped the national water polo team gain the bronze medal in the water polo. At club level, Bergvall represented Stockholms KK. Sports official In 1904, Bergvall was among the founding member of the Swedish Swimming Federation and served as its secretary between 1904 and 1908 and as chairman between 1909 and 1932. Tibor Benedek
Tibor Benedek (12 July 1972 – 18 June 2020) was a Hungarian water polo player and coach, widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. He played on the gold medal squads at the 2000 Summer Olympics, 2004 Summer Olympics and 2008 Summer Olympics. Benedek also competed at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics, where the Hungarian team placed 6th and 4th, respectively.
