In Missouri, villages are municipalities which incorporated with a population under 500. If the population is larger than 500, it may incorporate as a city (see List of cities in Missouri). List Of Cities In Missouri
Missouri is a state located in the Midwestern United States. In Missouri, cities are classified into three types: 3rd Class, 4th Class, and those under constitutional charters. A few older cities are incorporated under legislative charters (Carrollton, Chillicothe, LaGrange, Liberty, Miami, Missouri City, and Pleasant Hill) which are no longer allowed. (Carthage is also a Charter City and Charter Cities are by constitution not legislation and are still allowed to this day). The level at which they incorporate is determined by their population when they incorporate. They do not change if they gain or lose in population, unless a vote is held by the people. History Anniston was originally called "Hainley's Switch", after Jacob Hainley, the proprietor of a local mill. Atlanta is a city in Macon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 379 at the 2020 census. History Atlanta was platted in 1858. The community was named after Atlanta, Georgia. A post office called Atlanta has been in operation since 1868. On May 6, 1935, a TWA DC-2 en route from Los Angeles, California, to Washington, D.C., became lost in heavy fog near Atlanta. Arrow Rock, Missouri
Arrow Rock is a village in Saline County, Missouri, United States, located near the Missouri River. The entire village is part of the National Historic Landmark Arrow Rock Historic District, designated by the Department of the Interior, National Park Service in 1963. It is significant in the history of Westward Expansion, the Santa Fe Trail, and 19th-century artist George Caleb Bingham. Arkoe is a village in Nodaway County, Missouri, United States. The population was 68 at the 2010 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land. Etymology The United States Board on Geographic Names in its Geographic Names Information System only lists two Arkoes in the United States (the other being in Pike County, Ohio). One of the earliest uses of the name was in the 18th-century fantasy book "The Life and Adventures of Peter Wilkins" by Robert Paltock which was published in 1751 which said an Arkoe is a "water surrounded with wood." The story is about a sailor named Peter Wilkins who is shipwrecked on a mysterious island inhabited by flying people called "Glaws" who inhabit the Arkoes.
