This page lists brigades, regiments, battalions, and other formations and units of the Italian Army since World War II grouped by their administrative corps. Units grouped under their operational headquarters are listed at Structure of the Italian Army. The units are listed by order of precedence. After the unit's name, the date of foundation i.e. *1624 and the location it is currently based follows. Disbanded units follow below the active units. Infantry Corps Granatieri History The Granatieri (Grenadiers) are the oldest speciality of the Italian Army and act as honor guard for the President of Italy. In 1975 the Granatieri battalions, with the exception of the 3rd Battalion, were named for battles in which the Granatieri had distinguished themselves. 2nd Regiment "Granatieri Di Sardegna"
The 2nd Regiment "Granatieri di Sardegna" ( it, 2° Reggimento "Granatieri di Sardegna") is an inactive unit of the Italian Army based in Spoleto in Umbria. The regiment is part of the army's infantry corps' Granatieri (''Grenadiers'') speciality and was last operationally assigned to the Mechanized Brigade "Granatieri di Sardegna". The regiment was disbanded on 29 October 2003 and its battalion joined the 1st Regiment "Granatieri di Sardegna" as 2nd Grenadiers Battalion "Cengio. On 21 November 2017 the 2nd Grenadiers Battalion "Cengio" became an autonomous battalion and began the process of raising additional companies to bring it back to full strength began. It is planned that the 2nd Regiment "Granatieri di Sardegna" will reactivate and become fully operational by 2021 with the "Cengio" as its battalion. Mechanized Brigade "Aosta"
The Mechanized Brigade "Aosta" ( it, Brigata Meccanizzata "Aosta") is a mechanized infantry brigade of the Italian Army based on the island of Sicily. The Brigade is one of the oldest of the Italian Army and the name connects the brigade to its original area of recruitment the Aosta Valley and therefore the brigade's coat of arms is modeled after the coat of arms of Aosta. The brigade is part of the Division "Acqui". History 1831 to 1914 After Charles Albert of Sardinia ascended to the throne of the Kingdom of Sardinia on 27 April 1831 a major reform of the kingdom's military was started. Thus on 25 October 1831 the Brigade "Aosta" was raised with two infantry regiments. San Giorgio a Cremano is a primarily residential town and ''comune'' in the Metropolitan City of Naples, in Italy. It is located on the foothills of Mount Vesuvius to the west of the volcano, and is six kilometres to the south east of the centre of Naples. Most parts of the municipality command views of Mount Vesuvius, Mount Somma and the Bay of Naples. San Giorgio a Cremano was first settled in the 10th and 11th centuries, and has since been fairly regularly affected by the eruptions of Mount Vesuvius. The Division "Acqui" it, Divisione "Acqui" is one of three active divisions of the Italian Army. The division is the army's high readiness command for out-of-area operations. The Acqui is based in Capua in the Province of Caserta and assigned to the Operational Land Forces Command. The division carries on the name and traditions of the World War II Royal Italian Army 33rd Infantry Division "Acqui" and the Cold War Italian Army Motorized Brigade "Acqui". Justus Of Trieste
Saint Justus of Trieste (also Justus the Martyr, Just of Trieste; it, San Giusto di Trieste, San Giusto martire; died on 2 November 293) is a Roman Catholic saint. According to his ''passio'' (account of his trial and death), he was a citizen of Trieste in Italy, known for his works and charities. When charges of being a Christian were brought against him by his fellow citizens, he was tried according to Roman law. The 3rd Regiment "Granatieri di Sardegna" ( it, 3° Reggimento "Granatieri di Sardegna") is an inactive unit of the Italian Army last based in Orvieto in Umbria. The regiment is part of the army's infantry corps' Granatieri (''Grenadiers'') speciality and was last operationally assigned to the Mechanized Brigade "Granatieri di Sardegna". The regiment was disbanded on 30 April 2002. History The regiment was raised by the Brigade " Guardie" on 14 October 1848 as Cacciatori Regiment in preparation for the First Italian War of Independence. On 20 April 1850 the regiment became an autonomous unit with the name Regiment "Cacciatori di Sardegna". On the same date the Brigade "Guardie" changed its name to Brigade "Granatieri".
