Denson Springs, Texas
Denson Springs is an unincorporated community in Anderson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 100 in 2000. It is a part of the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History This area, originally called Ioni after a nearby native village, was granted to James Bradshaw in 1835. Upon his death in 1844, it was inherited by his brother, William Bradshaw, whose family arrived in 1849. In 1878, the growing community was renamed after William's daughter, Nancy Anne Denson, widow of William Denson. A post office was established at Denson Springs in 1893, and remained in operation until 1918. In 1896, the community only had a general store run by Wortham and Company, and then expanded to have 3 businesses, a doctor's office, a cotton gin and mill, and a church 5 years later. Providence, Texas
Providence is an unincorporated community in Anderson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is a part of the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History Providence got its start by a land grant given to W.T. Miller on March 20, 1858, in which he was given 8 acres of land for a church and a cemetery. The residents and the community's masons built a two-story tall building with a church in the downstairs area, and a lodge called Providence Lodge No. 400 in the upstairs area. This lodge was chartered on June 15, 1874, and a man named George H. Stovall was the master. A tornado came by in 1900 and completely destroyed the building, which was then moved to the nearby town of Elkhart five years later. The community's church members worshipped under an arbor until the materials that were not destroyed by the 1900 tornado were used to build a new, one-story building. Pert, Texas
Pert is an unincorporated community in Anderson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 20 in 2000. It is located within the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. Billy Meazell III is mayor of North Pert, TX. History The community was originally called Mount Vernon, but a post office going by the name of Pert was established in the settlement in 1899 and remained in operation until 1905. W.J. Dennis served as the first postmaster and was a local storekeeper before then. After the post office closed, the building was used as a church. A new church by the name of Mount Vernon was built in the community in 1913. It became a thriving community with a sawmill and a population of 200 in 1915. There was a store, a gristmill, and a cotton gin in Pert in the early 1920s. Neches, Texas
Neches is an unincorporated community in east central Anderson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 175 in 2000. It is located within the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History In 1872, the International-Great Northern Railroad was built through the area of Neches. J.J. Davis and Murdock McDonald, local landowners, donated land to be used for the expansion of the townsite and a train station. Neches' first post office, which opened the same year as the town, was called Nechesville. A Masonic lodge, two steam-powered sawmills, a gristmill, two churches, two general stores, and two saloons were in operation in the community by 1884 and the community had 100 inhabitants living in it. The community shipped lumber. Two cotton gins and a hotel were then added to the community's business directory by 1890 and had a large growth in population with 400 settlers. Mound City, Texas
Mound City, also known as Houston's Mound, is an unincorporated community in Houston and Anderson counties in the U.S. state of Texas. The Anderson County portion of the community is located within the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History Houston's Mound, as it was known then, was founded in the 1840s and named after an area where the terrain was higher than average. It was a thriving town until World War II; in 1930, Mound City had a general store, church, and a few houses. During the war, many residents were drafted or had to find work in larger cities. The city declined in population. There have been no population estimates since the 1960s when it was reported that a few houses remained. Massey Lake, Texas
Massey Lake is an unincorporated community in Anderson County, located within the U.S. state of Texas. It is located within the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History Massey Lake was named for an early settler who owned the land in this area. A post office was established at Massey Lake in 1922 and remained in operation until around 1956. In 1925, the settlement had 20 residents and it was that same number throughout 1966 when the last population figures for the community were available. Long Lake, Texas
Long Lake is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Anderson County, Texas, Anderson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located within the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History Long Lake was supposedly named for the nearby Long Lake (Texas), Long Lake, and was originally part of a large plantation that was purchased by Hugo Monnig in 1911. Even though this plantation developed the production of cotton, it became a trading and shipping port for agriculture in the surrounding area, since it was located on a former International-Great Northern Railroad. A man named A.L. Bowers unsuccessfully drilled many wells in the settlement in 1913 and several oil well, oil and gas wells created a profit that developed in the nearby lake's oilfield and the nearby Tucker by the Tidewater and Texas Seaboard Oil Company in 1932 and 1933.
