Sandvík
Sandvík (pronounced , "Sandy Bay"; da, Sandvig) is the northernmost village of the island of Suðuroy in the Faroe Islands. It is situated on the northern side of a shallow fjord. The village was previously known as Hvalvík (''Bay of Whales''). It changed its name to Sandvík in 1913 as there was too much confusion regarding mail delivery, because there is another village named Hvalvík on Streymoy. The village had originally been known as Sandvík during the Viking Age. History Sandvík is the place where Viking chief Sigmundur Brestisson was murdered after his long swim from Skúvoy in an attempt to flee from Tróndur í Gøtu. When Sigmundur came ashore exhausted to what he thought would be safety, the local farmer Torgrímur Illi fell upon him with his sons, and decapitated him for the golden bracelet he wore on his arm. Kollafjørður
Kollafjørður ( da, Kollefjord) is a village in the Faroe Islands, located on the island of Streymoy. As of 1. January 2022, the village had a population of 828. Its postal code is FO 410. Until 2001 it was a municipality in its own right but is now part of the Tórshavn Municipality. It is located by road north of Tórshavn, and stretches along the fjord of the same name. Geography The village is centered along the northern shore of the Kollafjørður Fjord. Above the fjord is a narrow valley which stretches over a hilly region where trails are used for trekking. The Kollafjørður valley measures and forms the eastern portion of the Kollfjardardalur valley, which lies east–west across Streymoy. It is a village which has developed length-wise along the main road with a few shops. The northern shore line of the road adjoins the fjord. Haraldssund
Haraldssund ( da, Haraldsund) is a settlement in the Faroe Islands, situated on the island of Kunoy. Haraldssund is located on the east coast of Kunoy and is connected to the village of Kunoy on the west coast by a tunnel. To the east, it is linked to the town of Klaksvík on Borðoy by a causeway. The tunnel and the causeway were built in the late 1980s. There is a small ruin 2 kilometers south of the village. Kunoy
Kunoy (meaning ''Woman island'', is an island located in the north-east of the Faroe Islands between Kalsoy to the west (with which there is no physical link) and Borðoy to the east (to which it is linked via a causeway). Settlements and transport There are two settlements on Kunoy: Kunoy (population 64), on the west coast and Haraldssund on the south-east coast. These have been connected by a tunnel since 1988. Haraldssund is connected by a causeway to the neighbouring island of Borðoy to the east of Kunoy. Before the causeway was built, travel to the island was by ferry. Leirvík
Leirvík ( da, Lervig) is a town on the Faroe Islands and was an important regional ferry harbour at the east coast of the second-largest island Eysturoy. Leirvík has a population of 1,048 (2022). It was the only town in the municipality of Leirvík (''Leirvíkar kommuna''), however on 1 January 2009, it merged with Gøtu kommuna to make the new municipality called Eysturkommuna. Leirvík is important for its fishing industry. The Norðoyatunnilin, a submarine tunnel to Klaksvík to the east, was opened in April 2006. A district heating system pulls heat from the sea, increases the heat in a heat pump powered by electricity, and sends the heat to the large buildings in the town. Trøllanes
Trøllanes ( da, Troldenæs) is a village at the northern end of the Faroese island of Kalsoy in the municipality of Klaksvík. Its postal code is FO 798. A tunnel to the village of Mikladalur to the south, the Trøllanestunnilin, was completed in 1985. Trøllanes is noted for its meat specialty, Garnatálg, made by kneading sheep fat. Trøllanes and Mikladalur formerly constituted the commune of Mikladalur, before being incorporated into Klaksvík. The name of the village means 'Troll peninsula'. The village name Origin story is that in the old days, the village was visited every Twelfth Night, by trolls from the surrounding mountains, and the villagers had to flee and seek shelter for the night in the neighbouring village of Mikladalur. Kalsoy
Kalsoy ( da, Kalsø) is an island in the north-east of the Faroe Islands of Denmark between Eysturoy and Kunoy. The name means man island; by contrast with the parallel island to the east, Kunoy, the name of which means woman island. The northernmost part and scenery of Kalsoy was used as stand-in for the Kuril Islands in eastern Russia while filming for the 25th James Bond movie ''No Time to Die''. In the film, which was released in 2021, the villain’s lair is located on the island, for which a harbour and missile silos were superadded digitally. Kalsoy, like Svínoy, is a comparatively isolated island, in that no bridge, tunnel, or causeway links to it. Húsar
Húsar ( da, Husum) is a village on the island of Kalsoy in the Faroe Islands. History Húsar is located on the east coast and the southern part of the island of Kalsoy. Húsar is connected to Klaksvík by a ferry that visits the village three times a day. From Húsar the other villages on the island can be reached by bus. Húsar is the oldest of the villages on Kalsoy. Húsar church, which is made of stone, was built in 1920. On 1 January 2017, the municipality of Húsar was fused into Klaksvík municipality. The majority of the former municipality's employees are affiliated with the primary industries; fisheries and livestock. Húsar is involved in fish farming, particularly the production of fry and fingerling. The fry are grown for 1½ to 2 years. After that it is placed in sea farms where it will grow into adult fish. Mikladalur
Mikladalur, meaning "great valley or dale" is the largest of four villages on the northern Faroese island of Kalsoy in the municipality of Klaksvík. It is situated in a large U-shaped valley on the east coast of the island. The town's stone church dates from 1856. A tunnel to Trøllanes to the north was completed in 1985. Legend of the Selkie Mikladalur has a legend of a selkie/sealwoman. Seals were believed to be former humans who voluntarily sought death in the ocean. Once a year, on Twelfth Night, they were allowed to come on land, strip off their skins and amuse themselves as human beings, dancing and enjoying themselves. A young farmer from Mikladalur once went to the beach to watch the selkies dance. There he sees a beautiful selkie maiden shedding her seal skin, and he is hit by an intense desire for her. Streymoy
Streymoy ( da, Strømø) is the largest and most populated island of the Faroe Islands. The capital, Tórshavn, is located on its southeast coast. The name means "island of currents". It also refers to the largest region of the country that also includes the islands of Hestur, Koltur and Nólsoy. Geography The island is oblong in shape and stretches roughly in northwest–southeast direction with a length of and a width of around .
