Surat
Surat is a city in the western Indian state of Gujarat. The word Surat literally means ''face'' in Gujarati and Hindi. Located on the banks of the river Tapti near its confluence with the Arabian Sea, it used to be a large seaport. It is now the commercial and economic center in South Gujarat, and one of the largest urban areas of western India. It has well-established diamond and textile industry, and is a major supply centre for apparels and accessories. About 90% of the world's diamonds supply are cut and polished in the city. It is the second largest city in Gujarat after Ahmedabad and the eighth largest city by population and ninth largest urban agglomeration in India. Ukai Dam
The Ukai Dam, constructed across the Tapi River, is the second largest reservoir in Gujarat after the Sardar Sarovar. It is also known as Vallabh Sagar. Constructed in 1972, the dam is meant for irrigation, power generation and flood control. Having a catchment area of about 62,255 km2 and a water spread of about 52,000 hectares, its capacity is almost same as that of the Bhakra Nangal Dam. The site is located 94 km from Surat. The dam is an earth-cum-masonry dam. Its embankment wall is 4,927 m long. Its earth dam is 105.156 meters high, whereas the masonry dam is 68.68 meters high. The dam's left bank canal feeds water to an area of 1,522 km2. and its right canal provides water to 2,275 km2 of land. A fort built by the Gaekwad dynasty of Baroda was submerged in the reservoir. Chauta Bazaar is one of the oldest market of Surat, Gujarat, India. Chauta Bazaar's history dates back to early 1700s. The present day Mota Mandir in Chauta was known as Vaishnao Haveli. There were shops surrounding the Haveli where the women folks visiting the temple would go shopping for utensils, clothes, cosmetics, grocery and other day-to-day household goods. Kavi Narmad Central Library
Kavi Narmad Central Library is a public library in Surat built by the Surat Municipal Corporation in 1991 at Ghod Dod Road. The library is the largest in the city with 2,26,391 books and a membership of 46,855. The library premises have a total area of 6158 sq. m. and was built at the cost of 4.03 crore. The library also houses a reading room and a newspaper section open to public. It is named after Veer Narmad the famous Gujarati poet from Surat and was opened to public on his 158th birth anniversary. On 18 January 2011 Information Centre, separate sections for senior citizen and rare book collection, conference hall and audio visual room were added. Nanpura Parsi Library
Nanpura Parsi Library and Reading Room is the oldest public library in Surat, formerly known for a large collection of books related to Parsi culture. Due to dwindling interest in the library, it eventually shut down. The contents of the library were sent to libraries in Navsari and Mumbai as well as to other libraries under the control of the Surat Parsi Punchayet. The Manav Vikas Sansthan, a trust running other libraries in Surat, took over operations in 1980 after the Nanpura Parsi Library was closed. The library was named after Andrews, a retired magistrate, and co-established by Rao Bahadur Naginchand Jhaveri, a wealthy pearl dealer who often contributed to the development of the city. Science Centre, Surat
Science Centre, Surat is a multi-facility complex in Surat, Gujarat, India built by the Surat Municipal Corporation in 2009, the first of its type in western India. The complex houses a Science Centre, museum, an art gallery, an auditorium, an Amphitheatre and a planetarium. It has been designed by Ahmedabad based architectural firm, HCP Design, Planning and Management Pvt. Ltd. The Complex The complex covers a total area of 21,800 sq. m. and was built at the cost of 50.24 crores. It has underground parking facility for 112 four-wheelers and 210 two-wheelers. It has two 400 tonne vapor absorption chiller plants for air conditioning. The complex also houses a rooftop solar power plant which generates about 1.14 lakh KW of power.
