This article lists the oldest extant buildings in Oklahoma, including extant buildings and structures constructed prior to and during the United States rule over Oklahoma. Only buildings built prior to 1870 are suitable for inclusion on this list, or the building must be the oldest of its type. In order to qualify for the list, a structure must: * be a recognizable building (defined as any human-made structure used or intended for supporting or sheltering any use or continuous occupancy); * incorporate features of building work from the claimed date to at least in height and/or be a listed building. This consciously excludes ruins of limited height, roads and statues. Bridges may be included if they otherwise fulfill the above criteria. Dates for many of the oldest structures have been arrived at by radiocarbon dating or dendrochronology and should be considered approximate. History Of Oklahoma
The history of Oklahoma refers to the history of the state of Oklahoma and the land that the state now occupies. Areas of Oklahoma east of its panhandle were acquired in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, while the Panhandle was not acquired until the U.S. land acquisitions following the Mexican–American War (1846–1848). Most of Oklahoma was set aside as Indian Territory, with the general borders of the Indian Territory being formed in 1834 from the Indian Intercourse Act. It was opened for general settlement around 1890. The "Sooners" were settlers who arrived before this period of official authorization. From 1890 to 1907 Oklahoma was known as Oklahoma Territory. Oklahoma became the 46th state to enter the union on November 16, 1907. It served the Cherokee Nation until it was sold to Cherokee County, Oklahoma, which used it as a jail into the 1970s. The prison, as built in 1874 for $6000, was a two-story building with a basement. The sandstone structure measures by . The second floor has been removed and replaced with a flat roof. There are two sandstone porches on the main level, front and back, with hipped roofs. The Cherokee National Jail was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 28, 1974. The jail is now a museum, named the Cherokee National Prison Museum. Latimer County is a county located in the southeastern part of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Its county seat is Wilburton. As of the 2010 census, the population was 11,154.
