Symbol
A symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow people to go beyond what is known or seen by creating linkages between otherwise very different concepts and experiences. All communication (and data processing) is achieved through the use of symbols. Symbols take the form of words, sounds, gestures, ideas, or visual images and are used to convey other ideas and beliefs. For example, a red octagon is a common symbol for "STOP"; on maps, blue lines often represent rivers; and a red rose often symbolizes love and compassion. Numerals are symbols for numbers; letters of an alphabet may be symbols for certain phonemes; and personal names are symbols representing individuals. The variable 'x', in a mathematical equation, may symbolize the position of a particle in space. The academic study of symbols is semiotics. In cartography, an organized collection of symbols forms a legend for a map ...

Enneagram (geometry)
In geometry, an enneagram (šŸŸ™ U+1F7D9) is a nine-pointed plane figure. It is sometimes called a nonagram, nonangle, or enneagon. The word 'enneagram' combines the numeral prefix ''ennea-'' with the Greek suffix '' -gram''. The ''gram'' suffix derives from ''Ī³ĻĪ±Ī¼Ī¼įæ†Ļ‚'' (''grammēs'') meaning a line. Regular enneagram A regular enneagram is a 9-sided star polygon. It is constructed using the same points as the regular enneagon, but the points are connected in fixed steps. Two forms of regular enneagram exist: *One form connects every second point and is represented by the SchlƤfli symbol . *The other form connects every fourth point and is represented by the SchlƤfli symbol . There is also a star figure, or 3, made from the regular enneagon points but connected as a compound of three equilateral triangles. (If the triangles are alternately interlaced, this results in a Brunnian link.) This star figure is sometimes known as the ''star of Goliath'', after or 2, th ...

6-star Rank
In the United States Armed Forces, a six-star rank is a proposed rank immediately superior to a five-star rank, possibly to be worn by the General of the Armies or Admiral of the Navy; however, this correlation was never officially recognized by the military or by Congress. History As Congress was trying to create the rank of Fleet Admiral in 1944, the Navy wanted to re-establish and elevate Admiral of the Navy to be equivalent to General of the Armies, but they could not legally do so without a congressional act. The Navy's chief of naval personnel, Vice Admiral Randall Jacobs, testified before the Committee on Naval Affairs of the House of Representatives, recommending that the rank of Admiral of the Navy should be made equivalent to General of the Armies, but a previous bill submitted for its re-establishment on 25 February 1944, failed to be passed into law. Congress passed Pub.L. 78-482 on 14 December 1944, creating the rank of fleet admiral, without re-establishing ...

5-star Rank
A five-star rank is the highest military rank in many countries.Oxford English Dictionary (OED), 2nd Edition, 1989. "five" ... "five-star adj., ... (b) U.S., applied to a general or admiral whose badge of rank includes five stars;" The rank is that of the most senior operational military commanders, and within NATO's standard rank scale it is designated by the code OF-10. Not all armed forces have such a rank, and in those that do the actual insignia of the five-star ranks may not contain five stars. For example: the insignia for the French OF-10 rank contains seven stars; the insignia for the Portuguese contains four gold stars. The stars used on the rank insignias of various Commonwealth of Nations are sometimes referred to colloquially as pips, but are stars of the orders of the Garter, Thistle or Bath or Eversleigh stars depending on the wearer's original regiment or corps, and are used in combination with other heraldic items, such as batons, crowns, swords or maple lea ...

Arabic Star
The Arabic star is a punctuation mark added to Unicode 1.1 because the asterisk (*) might appear similar to a Star of David in its six-lobed form (āœ»). The Arabic star is given a distinct character in Unicode, , in the range Arabic punctuation. Variants In many modern fonts, however, the asterisk is five-pointed, and the Arabic star is sometimes six- or eight-pointed. The two symbols are compared below (the display depends on your browser's font). Unicode In Unicode, Arabic and similar stars are encoded at: * * In some displays, the use of the Ł character can cause the text directionality to change. Asterisk
The asterisk ( ), from Late Latin , from Ancient Greek , ''asteriskos'', "little star", is a typographical symbol. It is so called because it resembles a conventional image of a heraldic star. Computer scientists and mathematicians often vocalize it as star (as, for example, in ''the A* search algorithm'' or ''C*-algebra''). In English, an asterisk is usually five- or six-pointed in sans-serif typefaces, six-pointed in serif typefaces, and six- or eight-pointed when handwritten. Its most common use is to call out a footnote. It is also often used to censor offensive words. In computer science, the asterisk is commonly used as a wildcard character, or to denote pointers, repetition, or multiplication. History The asterisk has already been used as a symbol in ice age cave paintings. There is also a two thousand-year-old character used by Aristarchus of Samothrace called the , , which he used when proofreading Homeric poetry to mark lines that were duplicated. Origen is know ...

Magic Star
An ''n''-pointed magic star is a star polygon with SchlƤfli symbol in which numbers are placed at each of the ''n'' vertices and ''n'' intersections, such that the four numbers on each line sum to the same magic constant. A normal magic star contains the integers from 1 to 2''n'' with no numbers repeated. The magic constant of an ''n''-pointed normal magic star is ''M'' = 4''n'' + 2. No star polygons with fewer than 5 points exist, and the construction of a normal 5-pointed magic star turns out to be impossible. It can be proven that there exists no 4-pointed star that will satisfy the conditions here. The smallest examples of normal magic stars are therefore 6-pointed. Some examples are given below. Notice that for specific values of ''n'', the ''n''-pointed magic stars are also known as ''magic hexagram'' etc. See also *Magic square In recreational mathematics, a square array of numbers, usually positive integers, is called a magic square if the sums ...
