San Francisco Bay Area
The San Francisco Bay Area, often referred to as simply the Bay Area, is a populous region surrounding the San Francisco, San Pablo, and Suisun Bay estuaries in Northern California. The Bay Area is defined by the Association of Bay Area Governments to include the nine counties that border the aforementioned estuaries: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, and San Francisco. Other definitions may be either smaller or larger, and may include neighboring counties that do not border the bay such as Santa Cruz and San Benito (more often included in the Central Coast regions); or San Joaquin, Merced, and Stanislaus (more often included in the Central Valley). Solano County, California
Solano County () is a county located in the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 453,491. The county seat is Fairfield. Solano County comprises the Vallejo–Fairfield, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area. Mount Thayer
Mount Thayer is a mountain in the Santa Cruz mountain range located in Santa Clara County, California. The summit is in a section of the abandoned Almaden Air Force Station, about 1 mile west of Mount Umunhum. The elevation of the summit is at feet. An old derelict building, surrounded by telephone poles, is located on the summit. Mount Thayer, along with the surrounding property, is off limits to the public. Mount Stakes
Mount Stakes is a mountain in the Diablo Range in California. The peak is located on the Santa Clara– Stanislaus county line and is located less than 1 mile north of Henry W. Coe State Park. It rises to an elevation of and is the highest point in Stanislaus County. It is west of Newman and southeast of Livermore. Some snow falls on the peak during the winter. Monument Peak (Milpitas, California)
Monument Peak is a mountain peak located southeast of Fremont and northeast of Milpitas in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area in California. Geography The mountain is part of a ridge in the Diablo Range that includes Mount Allison and Mission Peak and forms part of the border between Alameda County and Santa Clara County. The summit of Monument Peak lies just within the southern boundary of Mission Peak Regional Preserve in Alameda County and can be reached from the south via trails originating in Ed R. Levin County Park or from the north via the Bay Area Ridge Trail. Antenna Built on July 1, 1988, an antenna on Monument Peak broadcasts channels 36 (KICU) and 54 (PBS, KQEH) until January 17, 2018. Loma Prieta
Loma Prieta (from Spanish ''loma'' -hill, ''prieta'' -dark) is high and is the highest peak in the Santa Cruz Mountains in Northern California. Although the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was named for this mountain, the actual epicenter was five miles southwest of the peak, across the San Andreas fault, in the The Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. In the 19th century, the peak was called Mount Bache, a name given in honor of Alexander Dallas Bache; the name is no longer in use. From 1955 to 2005, the mountain was the longtime site for the transmitter tower of San Jose television station KNTV. In September 2005, it moved its transmitter northwest to San Bruno Mountain after it became the Bay Area's NBC affiliate. Lions Peak
Lions Peak is a prominent hill in the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in southwest Santa Clara County, California. The landmark lies west of San Martin, and is adjacent to the resort village of CordeValle. The headwaters of Lions Creek originate on the eastern flank of the hill, and flow southward before merging with Llagas Creek in Gilroy. The hill and surrounding area is located on approximately of privately owned lands, and is viewable along U.S. Route 101 and California State Route 152 in South Santa Clara Valley. History The land surrounding the peak, once part of the historic Rancho San Francisco de las Llagas, was purchased by Messrs Lion and Buckley in the late 19th century. El Toro (Santa Clara County, California)
El Toro is a prominent hill located along the eastern foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in southwest Santa Clara County, California. The iconic landmark is partially owned by the city of Morgan Hill, and its silhouette is incorporated in the city logo. History In Spanish, "El Toro" means "The Bull". According to local legend, 19th century American poet Bret Harte named the hill when he climbed it and discovered two bulls fighting near the summit (they subsequently chased him back down). Hiking Although a portion of the hill is on public land, access to the summit is through privately owned surrounding lands. Since 2008, the Morgan Hill Historical Society had sponsored annual spring hikes up to the summit. However, due to increased contention over property rights, no public hikes to the summit have been permitted since 2011. Black Mountain (Milpitas, California)
Black Mountain, also known as Mount Day, is a mountain in the Diablo Range of eastern Santa Clara County, California, east of Poverty Ridge and Arroyo Hondo, and about from Milpitas. The peak is one of the highest in area. The northern half of Black Mountain is an oak woodlands while the southern half is barren. Black Mountain can be clearly seen from most parts of the Santa Clara Valley including Sunnyvale, Cupertino, Mountain View and San Jose. The peak is visible from the Mount Hamilton and Monument Peak. Black Mountain (near Los Altos, California)
Black Mountain is a summit on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains of west Santa Clara County, California, south of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills, and west of Cupertino; it is within the Palo Alto city limits though not near the developed part of the city. It is located on the border between Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve and Monte Bello Open Space Preserve, with the summit located in the former. Mount Bielawski
Mount Bielawski or Mount Bielewski (with an e instead of an a) is located in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California, near the San Francisco Bay Area. The mountain reaches an elevation of just to the southwest of the Santa Cruz – Santa Clara county line and Highway 35. It is the highest point in Santa Cruz County. Some snow falls on the mountain during winter. The mountain is named for Casimir Bielawski who was a chief draughtsman of the Surveyor General's office. It has, also, been called Mount McPherson. San Bruno Mountain
San Bruno Mountain is horst fault block mountain located in northern San Mateo County, California; with some northern slopes crossing over into southern San Francisco, it is also surrounded by San Francisco Bay and the cities of Brisbane, Colma, Daly City, and South San Francisco. It is topped by a four mile long ridge. Trails along the summit afford expansive views of the San Francisco Bay Area. Radio Peak (elevation ) is the highest point, with several radio/TV broadcast towers, serving an area that would otherwise have poor service in the hilly Bay Area region. Much of the mountain lies within the San Bruno Mountain State Park. Next to the state park is the state San Bruno Mountain Ecological Reserve on the north slope.
