This is a list of notable street newspapers. A street newspaper is a newspaper or magazine sold by homeless or poor individuals and produced mainly to support these populations. Most such newspapers primarily provide coverage about homelessness and poverty-related issues, and seek to strengthen social networks within homeless communities. Street papers aim to give these individuals both employment opportunities and a voice in their community. In addition to being sold by homeless individuals, many of these papers are partially produced and written by them. Hobo News Cover
A hobo is a migrant worker in the United States. Hoboes, tramps and bums are generally regarded as related, but distinct: a hobo travels and is willing to work; a tramp travels, but avoids work if possible; and a bum neither travels nor works. Etymology The origin of the term is unknown. According to etymologist Anatoly Liberman, the only certain detail about its origin is the word was first noticed in American English circa 1890. The term has also been dated to 1889 in the Western—probably Northwestern—United States, and to 1888. Liberman points out that many folk etymologies fail to answer the question: "Why did the word become widely known in California (just there) by the early Nineties (just then)?" Author Todd DePastino notes that some have said that it derives from the term "hoe-boy", coming from the hoe they are using and meaning "farmhand", or a greeting such as "Ho, boy", but that he does not find these to be convincing explanations. Faktum
''Faktum'' is a street newspaper sold by homeless people in Gothenburg and other cities in southern Sweden. It is the equivalent of ''Situation Sthlm'' in Stockholm, '' Aluma'' in Malmö, Lund and Helsingborg, and ''The Big Issue'' in English-speaking countries. The paper was founded in 2001. In 2006 it was awarded the grand prize of the Swedish Publicists' Association (''Publicistklubben'') together with its sister papers ''Situation Sthlm'' and '' Aluma''. Put Domoi
''Put Domoi'' (путь домой, ''The Way Home'') is a Russian street newspaper sold by the homeless in St. Petersburg, published twice monthly. The sellers receive half of the price. It was started in 1994 as Na Dne (На дне, ''The Depths'') by Nochlezhka (meaning "shelter"), an organization for the homeless. It was renamed to its current name in 2003. It was closely modeled after The Big Issue and is a member of the International Network of Street Papers (INSP). The paper has been critical of human rights violations in Russia which has made it some enemies. The INSP has been important for financial support and political legitimacy. ''Das Megaphon'' () is a street newspaper sold by homeless in Graz and other cities in Styria, Austria. It was started in October 1995 and is run by Catholic charity Caritas. The paper is published monthly with a circulation of about 13,000 copies. It is sold mostly by Nigerian and Liberian male refugees.
