Short Film
A short film is any motion picture that is short enough in running time not to be considered a feature film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". In the United States, short films were generally termed short subjects from the 1920s into the 1970s when confined to two 35 mm reels or less, and featurettes for a film of three or four reels. "Short" was an abbreviation for either term. The increasingly rare industry term "short subject" carries more of an assumption that the film is shown as part of a presentation along with a feature film. Short films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals and made by independent filmmakers with either a low budget or no budget at all. Brownie the Wonder Dog was a 1920s List of animals in film and television#Dogs, dog actor that appeared in several American silent films, including ''Brownie's Little Venus'' (1921). He was signed under Century Film Company. Brownie was a Bull Terrier–Fox Terrier dog crossbreeds, crossbreed. Between 1926 and 1927 Jean d'Agraives and E. Nicolson created a comic strip in France, based on the film series, named ''Les Aventures du Chien Brownie''. Career Brownie was signed with a long-term contract with their trainer. During the starting point of being property for Century Films, the studio was in need of someone who could work with their canine actor, with the goal of making a duo centered on a series of comedies. Spooney Melodies
''Spooney Melodies'' was a series of live action musical shorts produced for Warner Bros. aimed to showcase popular tunes of the day. Only the first entry in the series bore the title "Spooney Melodies." Subsequent releases, of which there were four, bore the series title "Song'nata." As noted above, only five were made in 1930 and 1931. According to The Vitaphone Project, which tracks the status of early Warner Bros. sound films, all five films survive; the four "Song'nata" entries were not produced in the sound-on-disk Vitaphone format, but all survive in 35mm form. The first short, which is the one most widely available, is approximately six minutes long and features art deco style animations combined with film of the live-action performer (in this case, organist Milton Charles). Let George Do It (film Series)
''Let George Do It'' was a series of two-reeler American silent comedy films produced in the latter half of the 1920s. The films (40 in all) were based on the comic strip ''Let George Do It'', which was written and drawn by George McManus (who later created the more famous strip ''Bringing Up Father''). The series was produced by the Stern Brothers ( Julius Stern and Abe Stern) and was one of many silent comedy series issued by Universal Pictures. Syd Saylor starred as George in all of the films. His supporting players included Thelma Daniels, Jean Doree, Dorothy Gulliver, Colin Chase, Dorothy Coburn, Harry Martell, Derelys Perdue, Marie D'Arcy, Betty Walsh, and Lorima Clark. The ''Alice Comedies'' are a series of animated/live-action shorts created by Walt Disney in the 1920s, in which a live action little girl named Alice (originally played by Virginia Davis) and an animated cat named Julius have adventures in an animated landscape. ''Alice's Wonderland'' Disney, Ub Iwerks, and their staff made the first ''Alice Comedy'', a one-reel (ten-minute) 1923 short subject titled ''Alice's Wonderland'', while still heading the failing Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri. ''Alice's Wonderland'' is a 1923 Walt Disney short silent film, produced in Kansas City, Missouri by Laugh-O-Gram Studio. The black-and-white short was the first in a series of Walt Disney's famous ''Alice Comedies'' and had a working title of ''Alice in Slumberland''. The film was never shown theatrically, but was instead shown to prospective film distributors. Plot Alice (Virginia Davis) visits the Laugh-O-Gram Studio, where the animators (including Walt Disney) show her various scenes on their drawing boards. A few of them: a cat dancing to a cat band; a mouse poking at a cat until it moves; a couple of mice boxing, while the animators crowd around cheering and acting as corner-men.
