Sedimentary Formation
A geological formation, or simply formation, is a body of rock having a consistent set of physical characteristics (lithology) that distinguishes it from adjacent bodies of rock, and which occupies a particular position in the layers of rock exposed in a geographical region (the stratigraphic column). It is the fundamental unit of lithostratigraphy, the study of strata or rock layers. A formation must be large enough that it can be mapped at the surface or traced in the subsurface. Formations are otherwise not defined by the thickness of their rock strata, which can vary widely. They are usually, but not universally, tabular in form. They may consist of a single lithology (rock type), or of alternating beds of two or more lithologies, or even a heterogeneous mixture of lithologies, so long as this distinguishes them from adjacent bodies of rock. The Landen Group is a lithostratigraphic unit (a "group" of rock strata) in the Belgian subsurface. Voort Formation
The Voort Formation or Voort Member ( nl, Formatie van Voort or ; abbreviation in Belgium: Vo or in the Netherlands: VEVO) is a stratigraphic unit in the subsurface of north Belgium and the south of the Netherlands. The unit has the status of a formation in Belgium but is seen as a member of the Veldhoven Formation in the Netherlands. The Voort Formation consists of shallow marine sands with a late Oligocene age ( Chattian stage, about 25 million years old). Stratigraphy In Belgian lithostratigraphy the Voort Formation is part of the Rupel Group, though other formations in this group are slightly older (of the early Oligocene Rupelian stage). In the Netherlands the Voort Member is part of the Veldhoven Formation. In Belgium, a clayey subunit is treated as a member of the Voort Formation ( Veldhoven Member). Tongeren Group
The Tongeren Group is a lithostratigraphic unit (a sequence of rock strata) in the subsurface of Belgium. It consists of shallow marine, epicontinental and/or continental clays and sands from the late Eocene to early Oligocene epochs (between 37 and 30 million years old). The Belgian Tongeren Group correlates with the Dutch Tongeren Formation. The name was introduced by André Hubert Dumont in 1849. Subdivision The Tongeren Group is subdivided into three formations. From top to bottom these are: *the Borgloon Formation, lagunal or fluvial shell rich sand and clay; *the Sint Huibrechts-Hern Formation, marine shell bearing sand and clay; *the Zelzate Formation, shallow marine glauconiferous sand with thin clay layers. Tienen Formation
The Tienen Formation ( nl, Formatie van Tienen; french: Formation de Tienen; abbreviation: Ti) is a geologic formation in the subsurface of northern Belgium. The formation crops out in the province of Hainaut and the Hesbaye region in the province of Limburg. It has a late Thanetian (Paleocene) to early Ypresian (Eocene) age. The Tienen Formation consists of clay with thin lignite layers and lithified wood, sand (sometimes with shells) and marl. It has a continental to lagoonal sedimentary facies. The formation is a lagerstätte for fossils of vertebrate animals. Oligocene
The Oligocene ( ) is a geologic epoch of the Paleogene Period and extends from about 33.9 million to 23 million years before the present ( to ). Rupel Group
The Rupel Group is a stratigraphic group of rock strata in the subsurface of Belgium. It is subdivided into three formations that are all marine deposits (sands and clays) of Oligocene age. Name The Rupel Group was first named by Belgian geologist André Hubert Dumont in 1849. It shares its name with the Rupelian age (34 to 28 million years ago) of the geological timescale. Both group and age are named after the Belgian river Rupel. The Rupel Group corresponds with the Rupel Formation in the Netherlands. Opglabbeek Formation
The Opglabbeek Formation is a geologic formation in the subsurface of the eastern part of Belgian Limburg. The heterogeneous formation consists of clay and sand that was deposited lagoonally and fluvially during the early Selandian (Middle Paleocene, about 60 million years old). The formation is named after the town of Opglabbeek in Limburg. The Opglabbeek Formation is subdivided into two members: the Opoeteren Member (red clay with layers of lignite) and the Eisden Member (fine sand with crags). The Opglabbeek Formation's thickness ranges between and , reaching its greatest thickness as it abuts the Roer Valley Graben. Lede Formation
The Lede Formation ( nl, Formatie van Lede; abbreviation: Ld) is a geologic formation in the subsurface of Belgium. The formation is named after the town of Lede in East Flanders. It consists of shallow-marine limestone and sandstone, deposited in the former sea that covered Belgium during the Eocene. The Lede Formation crops out in East Flanders, Flemish Brabant, Antwerp and parts of Hainaut, Walloon Brabant and West Flanders. It forms a laterally continuous unit of calcareous and glauconiferous sandstone, sandy limestone and calcareous sandstone, which reaches a thickness of up to 15 metres.
