This list shows each country which has a union affiliated to World Rugby, the international governing body for rugby union. It also shows the number of registered clubs playing in each country, official referees and the number of registered players broken down by gender and age group. In 2016, the total number of registered players increased from 2.82 million to 3.2 million while the total number of non-registered rugby players rose from 4.91 million to 5.3 million. South Africa has the most registered players with 651,146 and England the most players overall with 2,139,604. World Rugby is the world governing body for the sport of rugby union. World Rugby organises the Rugby World Cup every four years, the sport's most recognised and most profitable competition. It also organises a number of other international rugby competitions, such as the World Rugby Sevens Series, the Rugby World Cup Sevens, the World Under 20 Championship, and the Pacific Nations Cup. The Royal Moroccan Rugby Federation (french: Fédération Royale Marocaine de Rugby) is the governing body for rugby union in Morocco. It is affiliated with the International Rugby Board and is responsible for the Moroccan national team and the Moroccan Rugby Championship. Zimbabwe Rugby Union
The Zimbabwe Rugby Union was founded in 1895 as the Rhodesia Rugby Football Union, and is the governing body of rugby union in Zimbabwe. When the Pioneer Column arrived in Rhodesia from the Cape Province in 1890 it brought with it the country's first rugby players. The oldest clubs in the country were formed in 1894 in Bulawayo and the Rhodesia Rugby Football Union was founded one year later in 1895. Rhodesia competed in the second division of South Africa's Currie Cup. In 1980 the Rhodesia Rugby Football Union was renamed the Zimbabwe Rugby Union when the country's name changed as well. Today, rugby union is a popular minority sport in Zimbabwe, though nowhere near as popular as football or cricket.
