Research Vessel
A research vessel (RV or R/V) is a ship or boat designed, modified, or equipped to carry out research at sea. Research vessels carry out a number of roles. Some of these roles can be combined into a single vessel but others require a dedicated vessel. Due to the demanding nature of the work, research vessels may be constructed around an icebreaker hull, allowing them to operate in polar waters. History The research ship had origins in the early voyages of exploration. By the time of James Cook's ''Endeavour'', the essentials of what today we would call a research ship are clearly apparent. In 1766, the Royal Society hired Cook to travel to the Pacific Ocean to observe and record the transit of Venus across the Sun. The ''Endeavour'' was a sturdy vessel, well designed and equipped for the ordeals she would face, and fitted out with facilities for her "research personnel", Joseph Banks. As is common with contemporary research vessels, ''Endeavour'' also carried out more than ...

Type 625 Research Vessel
Type 625 oceanographic research ship is a series of oceanographic research ship developed by China for its People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN). The series consisted of three models, A, B & C, but A & B are usually grouped together as one because C model differs from Models A & B on much greater scale. Originally designed to replace earlier Type 614, Type 625 has been replaced by its follow-on Type 636, and has since either retired from active service of PLAN and transferred to civilian agencies. Type 625A/B Type 625A/B is the first member of the Type 625 series. Requirement of Type 625 was issued in the late 1970s, and a total of four units were planned. Construction of the first unit begun in the early 1970s, and others followed. Based on the experience of deployment, the fourth unit has some improvement, and the difference is large enough to have a different designation as Type 625B. Subsequently, the original Type 25 was re-designated as Type 625A, and the term Type 625 is use ...

''Aranda'' is a Finnish ice-strengthened research vessel built by Wärtsilä Marine in 1989 and owned by the Finnish Environment Institute. A state-of-the-art research vessel equipped for icy conditions, she operates mainly in the Baltic Sea but has also made voyages to the Arctic Sea as well as the areas around Antarctica Antarctica () is Earth's southernmost and least-populated continent. Situated almost entirely south of the Antarctic Circle and surrounded by the Southern Ocean, it contains the geographic South Pole. Antarctica is the fifth-largest contine .... A major overhaul of the ship began on summer 2017. During the maintenance the length of the ship will be increased to accommodate additional research and laboratory facilities. Katarina (1953 Ship)
''Katarina'' is a Finnish training ship of the Kotka School of Nautical Studies. Built by Valmet in Helsinki in 1953 as ''Aranda'', she was the second vessel to bear the name. Until 1989, she served as a transport vessel for the Finnish National Board of Navigation and a research vessel for the Finnish Institute of Marine Research. Career In 1949, the Finnish National Board of Navigation ordered an ice-strengthened passenger ship to transport people and cargo to the islands in the Archipelago Sea. The new vessel was launched in 1951 and christened ''Aranda''. She was the second vessel to bear the name after the previous ''Aranda'' had been handed over to the Soviet Union as war reparations after World War II. Due to these reparations, the delivery of the vessel was delayed until 1953. While primarily built as a "winter boat" for the Archipelago Sea communities, but during the summer months she served as a research vessel for the Finnish Institute of Marine Research. Durin ...

Thor (1903)
''Thor'' was a Danish research vessel from 1903 to 1927. She was built by Edwards Brothers at North Shields, England in 1899 as a steam trawler. ''Thor'' conducted hydrographical and oceanographical research in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean and helped locate the spawning grounds of the Icelandic cod. Most importantly, ''Thor'' conducted two expeditions to the Mediterranean Sea in 1908-1910 with Johannes Schmidt as cruise leader. The aim of the expeditions, funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, was to locate the spawning grounds of the European eel. Contrary to their expectations the expeditions found that fewer eel larvae ( leptocephals) were found the deeper they went into the Mediterranean, but they also grew larger. The logical conclusion was that the spawning grounds were not in the Mediterranean, but in the Atlantic Ocean. In a broader perspective, the greatest result of the two expeditions was the very large contribution to the general understanding of the oceano ...

Sallingsund (1873)
Until 1 January 2007 Sallingsund municipality was a municipality (Danish, '' kommune'') in the former Viborg County in the northwest of the Salling Peninsula, a part of the larger Jutland peninsula in northwest Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 99 km², and had a total population of 6,083 (2005). Its last mayor was Jens Jørn Justesen, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party. The main town and the site of its municipal council was the town of Roslev. The 1,717 meter long Sallingsund Bridge, which opened on 30 May 1978, connects the towns of Sallingsund to the town of Nykøbing Mors on the island of Mors, and then continues northwest to the island of Vendsyssel-Thy. Before the bridge was built there was a train ferry connection over the strait from the town of Glyngøre to Nykøbing on the ship ''Pinen og Plagen'' ("The Torment and the Plague"). Sallingsund municipality was, as the result of ''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" of 200 ...

Originally built for the Danish Fisheries and Marine Research, but transferred to the National Institute for Aquatic Resources under the Danish Technical University in 2007. The ship is rigged as a deep sea stern trawler and fully equipped with facilities for fisheries and hydrographical research. Dana (1937)
''Dana'' was the primary Danish research vessel for almost 40 years. It was built in 1937 and served research purposes until 1980. On the first cruise into the North Atlantic in 1938 it was discovered that the ship was unsuited for its purpose, as it was not sufficiently stable to allow scientific work. It was returned to the shipyard and extended by in 1939. During the Second World War (1940-1945) the ship was kept and maintained in Copenhagen harbour, but with vital engine parts removed and thus never seized by the German occupation force. The main work from ''Dana'' was to conduct marine biological and hydrographical research in the Baltic, North Sea and waters around Faroe Islands and Greenland. In 1966 ''Dana'' was on a cruise to the Sargasso Sea and West Indies (cruise leader Erik Berthelsen), with primary aims to conduct hydrographical research and continue research on the reproductive biology of the European eel. ''Dana'' was succeeded by the research vessel ''Dana'' ...
