The International Ski and Snowboard Federation, also known as FIS (french: Fédération Internationale de Ski et de Snowboard), is the highest international governing body for skiing and snowboarding. It was previously known as the International Ski Federation () until 26 May 2022 when the name was changed to include snowboard. Founded on 2 February 1924 in Chamonix, France during the inaugural Winter Olympic Games, FIS is responsible for the Olympic skiing disciplines, namely Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined, freestyle skiing, and snowboarding. Lieutenant General Carl Axel Fredrik Ivar Holmquist (22February 1879 – 24September 1954) was a Swedish Army officer and sports official. He was president of the International Ski Federation from 1924 to 1934 and Chief of the Army from 1940 to 1944. Early life Holmquist was born on 22 February 1879 in Helsingborg, Sweden, the son of lieutenant general Fredrik Holmquist and his wife baroness Cecilia Raab. Career Military career Holmquist was commissioned as an officer and second lieutenant in 1899 and was assigned to Göta Life Guards (I 2) where he became lieutenant in 1903. Holmquist attended the Royal Swedish Army Staff College from 1902 and 1904 and the Firing School in 1904. Holmquist was a cadet of the General Staff from 1905 to 1907, staff adjutant and lieutenant of the General Staff in 1908 and conducted a field trip in Russia the same year. Marc Hodler ( – ) was a Switzerland, Swiss lawyer, President of the International Ski Federation (1951–1998), member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1963 until his death, and contract bridge, bridge player. Hodler is best known for having exposed the 2002 Winter Olympic bid scandal, Olympic bid scandal for the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter games in December 1998. Born in Bern, Hodler was a keen skier and first urban member of his national squad. An injury prevented him from entering any international competitions but he became a coach. Hodler was the president of the International Ski Federation from 1951 to 1998. He was an IOC vice president from 1993 to 1997 and served four separate terms on the rule-making executive board. Gian Franco Kasper (24 January 1944 – 9 July 2021) was a Swiss ski official who was president of the International Ski Federation (FIS) from 1998 to 2021. He also served as a member of the International Olympic Committee from 2000 to 2018 and member of the World Anti-Doping Agency from 2003 to 2021. Early life Kasper was born in St. Moritz on 24 January 1944. He studied at the University of Zurich, obtaining degrees in journalism, philosophy, and psychology. After his university studies, he worked as an editor for the ''St. Moritz Kurier''. He later went into the tourism industry, founding a Swiss tourism office in Montreal in 1974 and serving as its manager. Career Kasper was appointed Secretary-General of the International Ski Federation in 1975 by Marc Hodler, its president at the time. He held the post until Hodler's retirement in 1998.
