Aarle-Rixtel
Aarle-Rixtel is a village in the Dutch municipality of Laarbeek in North Brabant. It lies about 4 km north of Helmond. Since the municipal reorganization of 1968 the castle Croy is part of Aarle-Rixtel. History Aarle was first mentioned in 1249 as Arleh, and means "open forest with maple trees". Rixtel was first mentioned in 1179 as Ricstelle. The etymology is unknown. The villages developed in the Middle Ages along the Aa River. The two villages merged into a single entity. Aarle used to be a site of pilgrimage, and had a church, guesthouse, monastery and an inn. The Chapel of Our Lady in the Sand is a pilgrimage site which was built around 1500. It was rebuilt in 1597. In 1846, it was converted to town hall, but became a chapel agan in 1853. In 1969, it was restored and made symmetrical again. Achtmaal
Achtmaal is a village the south of the Netherlands. It is located in Zundert, North Brabant, near the border with Belgium. History The village was first mentioned in 1294 as "Gilberti de Achtmale", and is a combination of "reserved forest" and "court of justice". Achtmaal was home to 100 people in 1840. Achthuizen
Achthuizen is a village in the Dutch province of South Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Goeree-Overflakkee, and lies about 17 km south of Spijkenisse. The village was first mentioned around 1750 as "De Agthuisen", and means "eight houses". Achthuizen has two diagonally placed centres and looks like a number 8 from the air. Most of the settlement dates from after 1930. Achterveld
Achterveld is a village in the central Netherlands. It is a part of the municipality of Leusden, Utrecht and is located about 8 km east of Amersfoort. A small part of the village is located in Barneveld. The village is a Catholic enclave in a Protestant region. It has a neo-romantic church. In 2001, the village of Achterveld had 1616 inhabitants. Achterberg
Achterberg is a village in the Dutch province of Utrecht. It is part of the municipality of Rhenen and it lies about 5 km west of Wageningen. The village was first mentioned in 1417 as Achterbergh, and means "(settlement) behind the hill". Achterberg developed as an ''esdorp'' on the northern flank of a hill near castle Ter Horst. The castle was built in 1160 and demolished in 1528. In 1840, Achterberg was home to 1,043 people. In 1940, the village was the scene of heavy fighting during the Battle of the Grebbeberg. Absdale
Absdale is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Hulst, and lies about 32 km southwest of Bergen op Zoom. Absdale is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Hulst. Absdale has place name signs. It used to be home to 550 people in 1840. Nowadays, it consists of about 40 houses. The hamlet was first mentioned in 1315 as te Absdale, and means valley of the abbot which refers to the Ter Duinen Abbey. Abcoude
Abcoude () is a town and former municipality in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. Since 2011 it has been part of the municipality of De Ronde Venen. Population centres The former municipality of Abcoude consisted of the villages Abcoude and Baambrugge, and the hamlet Stokkelaarsbrug. Geography Abcoude lies in the Province Utrecht, about 13 km southeast of (the centre of) Amsterdam, on the confluence of the Angstel River, Gein River and Holendrecht River.
