Uniquely among New Zealand rivers, the various pools and widenings of the Tongariro River and its marshy delta have been given specific names which are recognised as official by Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). The river, the main waterway of the Waikato River system above Lake Taupo in the central North Island, has over 40 named pools, the majority of which are close to the town of Turangi, at or immediately above the river's delta. Tongariro River
The Tongariro River is a river in the North Island of New Zealand. The part of the Waikato River from the Waihohonu Stream, down to Lake Taupo, was formally named the Tongariro River in 1945. The river originates in the Central Plateau of the North Island where it is fed by numerous tributaries (such as the Whitikau, Poutu, and Mangamawhitiwhiti streams) that flow off the surrounding hill ranges and mountains such as Mount Ruapehu. It then winds its way north, through the township of Turangi before entering Lake Taupo via a number of river mouths. The minimum volume of water flowing down the lower Tongariro River ranges from approximately (recorded at the upper rivers Poutu Intake) to (recorded at the lower rivers Major Jones Pool). This volume can substantially increase due to catchment of rainfall by the surrounding mountains and hill ranges. Maketu Island
Maketu is a small town on the Bay of Plenty Coast in New Zealand. Maketu is located in the Western Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. Maketu has an estuary from which the Kaituna River used to flow. It is also adjacent to Newdicks Beach located on the south eastern side of Okurei Point. Maketu is rich in ancestral Māori culture, specifically the Te Arawa tribe. Maketu was the landing site of the Te Arawa canoe. The Chief who led the voyage of the Te Arawa waka from Hawaiki to New Zealand/Aotearoa was known as Tametekapua.
