Dramatist
A playwright or dramatist is a person who writes plays. Etymology The word "play" is from Middle English pleye, from Old English plæġ, pleġa, plæġa ("play, exercise; sport, game; drama, applause"). The word "wright" is an archaic English term for a craftsman or builder (as in a wheelwright or cartwright). The words combine to indicate a person who has "wrought" words, themes, and other elements into a dramatic form—a play. (The homophone with "write" is coincidental.) The first recorded use of the term "playwright" is from 1605, 73 years before the first written record of the term "dramatist". It appears to have been first used in a pejorative sense by Ben Jonson to suggest a mere tradesman fashioning works for the theatre. Sumner Locke
Helena Sumner Locke (4 July 1881 – 18 October 1917) was an Australian novelist, dramatist/playwright, poet and short story writer. Her sister was the socialist Lilian Locke. Early life Born in 1881, she was the sixth daughter of Anglican clergyman Rev. William Locke and Annie (née Seddon), both born in England. She spent the early years of her childhood in Queensland before moving with her family to Melbourne in 1888. Career Locke began publishing short stories in such publications as '' The Bulletin'' and the ''Native Companion'' before her first play, ''The Vicissitudes of Vivienne'', was produced in Melbourne in 1908. This was followed the next year by a Sydney production of ''A Martyr to Principle'', a production she wrote in collaboration with Stanley McKay. Carlton Dawe
William Carlton Lanyon Dawe, generally known as Carlton Dawe (30 July 1865 – 30 May 1935), was a prolific Australian author of over 70 books including romance, mystery and crime. Biography William was born in Moonta, South Australia in 1865 to Henry Dawe and Francis Lanyon. Dawe was born in Adelaide and came from an old Cornish family. He grew up with his sister, Gwendoline Lanyon Dawe. Dawe came to Melbourne with his parents around 1880. In 1885, he published in ''Sydonia and other Poems'' in London, beginning a trend of publishing novels in both this city and his local Melbourne. In 1886 ''Love and the World and other Poems'' was published in Melbourne. As these poems were possibly considered no more than average quality, they did not suggest any particular promise. Thomas Louis Buvelot Esson (10 August 1878 – 27 November 1943) was an Australian poet, journalist, critic and playwright. He was a co-founder of the Pioneer Players. His second wife, Hilda Esson (nee Bull), had a career in theatre besides working as a doctor in the field of public health. Early life and education Esson was born on 10 August 1878 at Leith in Edinburgh, Scotland, but moved to Melbourne, Australia, when he was three, along with his widowed mother. She had siblings in Melbourne, including artist John Ford Paterson, and Esson was raised mostly by his aunts. He attended the University of Melbourne from 1896, but did not finish his arts degree. Dora Wilcox (born Mary Theodora Wilcox, 24 November 1873 – 14 December 1953), was a New Zealand and Australian poet and playwright. Biography Wilcox was born in Christchurch, New Zealand to William Henry Wilcox and his wife Mary Elizabeth, née Washbourne. She was educated privately and at Canterbury College, before spending three years teaching in Armidale, New South Wales. George Beeby
Sir George Stephenson Beeby KBE (23 May 1869 – 18 July 1942) was an Australian politician, judge and author. He was one of the founders of the Labor Party in New South Wales, and represented the party in state parliament from 1907 to 1912. He fell out with the party and later served as an independent, a Nationalist, and a Progressive. He left parliament in 1920 to join the state arbitration court, and in 1926 was appointed to the Commonwealth Court of Conciliation and Arbitration. He was Chief Judge from 1939 until his retirement in 1941. Guy Newell Boothby (13 October 1867 – 26 February 1905) was a prolific Australian novelist and writer, noted for sensational fiction in variety magazines around the end of the nineteenth century. He lived mainly in England. He is best known for such works as the Dr Nikola series, about an occultist criminal mastermind who is a Victorian forerunner to Fu Manchu, and ''Pharos, the Egyptian'', a tale of Gothic Egypt, mummies' curses and supernatural revenge.
