Plantations In The American South
A plantation complex in the Southern United States is the built environment (or complex) that was common on agricultural plantations in the American South from the 17th into the 20th century. The complex included everything from the main residence down to the pens for livestock. Until the abolition of slavery, such plantations were generally self-sufficient settlements that relied on the forced labor of enslaved people. Plantations are an important aspect of the history of the Southern United States, particularly the antebellum era (pre-American Civil War). The mild temperate climate, plentiful rainfall, and fertile soils of the southeastern United States allowed the flourishing of large plantations, where large numbers of enslaved Africans or African Americans were held captive and forced to produce crops to create wealth for a white elite. Aspendale (Kenton)
Aspendale is a historic house and plantation property on Delaware Route 300 west of Kenton, Kent County, Delaware, United States. The main house, built 1771–73, has been under a single family's ownership since construction and is a rare, well-preserved example of a Georgian "Quaker plan" house. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970. and Description and history Aspendale is located about west of Kenton, on the north side of Delaware Route 300. The property is over in size, consisting of fields and woodlands roughly bisected by the road. The main house is set near the road, surrounded by landscaping. Clark County is a county located in the south-central part of the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2010 census, the population was 22,995. The county seat is Arkadelphia. Arkadelphia, Arkansas
Arkadelphia is a city in Clark County, Arkansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,714. The city is the county seat of Clark County. It is situated at the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. Two universities, Henderson State University and Ouachita Baptist University, are located here. Arkadelphia was incorporated in 1857. History The site was settled in about 1809 by John Hemphill, operator of a nearby salt works, Arkansas's first industry. It was known as Blakelytown until 1839, when the settlement adopted the name Arkadelphia. The town was named "Arkadelphia," a combination of ''Ark-'' from the state's name ''Arkansas'' and ''adelphia'' from the Greek meaning "brother/place". Rosedale Plantation Barn
The Rosedale Plantation Barn is a historic barn at 879 Old Military Road in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The barn measures by , and was constructed from hand-hewn logs. It is the last surviving structure of a slave plantation that was established in 1860, and was disassembled and reconstructed at its present location in 2002 to save it from demolition. It is believed to be the largest log barn in the state. The barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Lake Village, Arkansas
Lake Village is a city in and the county seat of Chicot County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,575 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Arkansas Delta. Lake Village is named for its location on Lake Chicot, an oxbow lake formed by the Mississippi River. History According to legend, the remains of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto might be buried under Lake Chicot. His expedition visited ''Guachoya'', a native village along the edge of the lake, which is recorded as the site of his death (list of sites and peoples visited by the Hernando de Soto Expedition). Sunnyside Plantation
The Sunnyside Plantation was a former cotton plantation and is a historic site, located near Lake Village in Chicot County, Arkansas, in the Arkansas Delta region. Built as a cotton plantation in the Antebellum South, it was farmed using the forced labor of enslaved African Americans. After the American Civil War in1865, freedmen farmed it. From the 1890s to the 1910s, the plantation used convict laborers and employed immigrants from Northern Italy, many of whom were subject to peonage. They were later replaced by Black sharecroppers. The plantation was closed down and it was broken up in the 1940s. Nowadays, only a historical marker reminds Lake Village residents and visitors of its history. Morrison Plantation Smokehouse
The Morrison Plantation Smokehouse is a historic plantation outbuilding in rural Hot Spring County, Arkansas. Located off County Road 15 near Saginaw, it is the last surviving remnant of a once-extensive forced labor camp. It was built about 1854, probably by the forced labor of enslaved people, on the plantation of Daniel Morrison. It is a hexagonal structure, built out of dry laid fieldstone, and capped with a hip roof that has a gabled venting cupola at the top.
