A plantation complex in the Southern United States is the built environment (or complex) that was common on agricultural plantations in the American South from the 17th into the 20th century. The complex included everything from the main residence down to the pens for livestock. Pender County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 60,203. Its county seat is Burgaw. Pender County is part of the Wilmington, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The county was formed in 1875 from New Hanover County. It was named for William Dorsey Pender of Edgecombe County, a Confederate general mortally wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg. Old Town Plantation is a historic plantation house located near Battleboro, Edgecombe County, North Carolina. It was built about 1742, and is a -story, frame dwelling with a gambrel roof on a brick foundation. It features a double-shoulder Flemish bond chimney with small brick wings, and two other brick chimneys. The house has a hall-and-parlor plan. Also on the property is a contributing log storage house with a pyramidal roof and a board-and-batten door. The house was moved in 1983, to a new site less than one mile west of the original site. Orton Plantation
The Orton Plantation is a historic plantation house in the Smithville Township of Brunswick County, North Carolina, United States. Located beside the Cape Fear River between Wilmington and Southport, Orton Plantation is considered to be a near-perfect example of Southern antebellum architecture. Built in 1735 by the co-founder of Brunswick Town, the Orton Plantation house is one of the oldest structures in Brunswick County. During its history Orton Plantation has been attacked by Native Americans, used as a military hospital, and been home to lawyers, physicians, military leaders, and a Colonial governor.
