The State Register of Heritage Places is the heritage register of historic sites in Western Australia deemed significant at the state level by the Heritage Council of Western Australia. History In the 1970s, following its establishment of the National Trust of Western Australia, the National Trust created a set of classified properties, and following legislation requiring inventories, Local Government authorities in Western Australia produced a subsequent set of Municipal Inventories, which then resulted in items then being included in the state register. As a result most register records include dates and details from the three different processes. In some cases authorities other than councils had governance over localities such as ''Redevelopment'' authorities, and they also provided Heritage Inventories in that stage of the process. Albany Convict Gaol
Albany Convict Gaol also known as the Old Gaol is a restored gaol that operates as a museum in Albany, Western Australia. Description Buildings within the gaol include the Great Hall, the warders' quarters and the cells. They are arranged around a central courtyard with a hiring depot located in the centre. The entire prison area is surrounded by stone walls studded with glass from broken bottles. History The gaol was established in 1852 for imperial convicts transported to Albany as skilled labourers. It initially consisted of a cell block for convicted men and quarters for the warden. The gaol was built with rehabilitation as a key principle and served not only to house inmates but as a hiring depot. Convicts who were sentenced to transportation from England from between 1850 and 1868 often served their time in the gaol. Desert Mounted Corps
The Desert Mounted Corps was an army corps of the British Army during the First World War, of three mounted divisions renamed in August 1917 by General Edmund Allenby, from Desert Column. These divisions which served in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign had been formed by Australian light horse, British yeomanry, and New Zealand mounted rifles brigades, supported by horse artillery, infantry and support troops. They were later joined by Indian cavalry and a small French cavalry detachment. The Desert Mounted Corps (DMC) comprised the ANZAC Mounted Division, the Australian Mounted Division and the Yeomanry Mounted Division, with infantry formations attached when required, as had Desert Column. Old Farm, Strawberry Hill
The Old Farm, now known as Strawberry Hill/Barmup is located on Strawberry Hill in the suburb of Mira Mar in Albany, Western Australia. It is known as being the first farm in Western Australia. The hill on which the property is situated rises to a height of and is a spur of Mount Clarence. The soil is a mixture of clay and gravel with rich black loam on the lower side. The farm was initially established in 1827 as a government farm when the first Europeans settled at King George Sound. Edmund Lockyer, Alexander Collie and John Lawrence Morley selected the site as a government farm. Originally it occupied an area of but only remain today. The next three commandants of the settlement, Captain Wakefield, Lieutenant Sleeman and Captain Collet Barker, followed Lockyer's plan of continuing to develop the farm. Albany Post Office
Albany Post Office is a heritage site of the former post office in Albany, Western Australia. The site was also a Customs office, a base station of the overland telegraph, and is noted for its architectural and historical significance. It was listed by the Register of the National Estate in 1992. The building is situated on Stirling Terrace, opposite Spencer Street, on a multilevel site that overlooks Princess Royal Harbour. The main building was constructed in two stages, the first in local materials such as brick, granite and sheoak shingles, the second also included materials imported from New South Wales. The original building was completed in 1869, after requests from the Government Resident to the administration in Perth, Western Australia. Large scale site works included excavations, by convict labour, and a large granite retaining wall up to 5 feet thick. The Rocks, Albany
The Rocks, also referred to as Government House or Government Cottage, is a residence in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The building was constructed in 1882 for William Grills Knight, a prominent local identity, and his family. Knight later served as mayor of the City of Albany from 1886 to 1888 and the family remained at the property until 1910, the last owner being his daughter, Mary Knight. The building was sold to Mr Dymes who sold to Mr Butcher in 1910, who made various improvements on the building. The building is set on of manicured gardens situated on the side of Mount Melville and overlooks the town of Albany and Princess Royal Harbour. The Government of Western Australia acquired the property in 1912 to utilize as a summer cottage for vice regal dignitaries.
