The Northern Territory is a self governing territory of Australia. It has a population of 232,605 as of the 2021 Australian census and occupies an area of . Official population statistics are published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, which conducts a census every five years. The most recent census for which data has been released is the 2021 census. Urban centres and localities by population SA1's are areas that subdivide all of Australia, and have a population between 200 and 800 people and an average population size of 400. Urban centres and localities are defined by the Australian Bureau of Statistics to be clusters of urban SA1's. Clusters with a population higher than 1,000 are considered urban centres and clusters with a population between 200 and 999 are considered localities. Milingimbi Island, also Yurruwi, is the largest island of the Crocodile Islands group off the coast of Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia. Location Milingimbi lies approximately east of Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin and west of Nhulunbuy. History Aboriginal Australians, Aboriginal people have occupied the area for more than 40,000 years. Minyerri
Minyerri is a town located 240 km south-east of Katherine, Northern Territory.http://www.rahc.com.au/sites/default/files/documents/community_profiles/Minyerri%20Community%20Profile.pdf The town has a population of 618 people, and is part of the Roper Gulf Shire Council area. The languages spoken in this community include Alawa, Kriol and English. The services available in the community include preschool, primary and secondary educational services, a women's centre, a Centrelink storefront, two retail stores, a police station, and an air strip. There is no mobile phone coverage in the area, no internet except at the clinic, and a mail plane visits every Tuesday. A permit is required for non-Aboriginal people to enter the community. Lajamanu, formerly known as Hooker Creek Native Settlement or just Hooker Creek, is a small town of the Northern Territory of Australia. It is located around from Katherine and approximately from Darwin. At the 2016 Australian census, Lajamanu had a population of 606, of whom 89.3 percent are of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander origin, chiefly Warlpiri people. History Lajamanu was established in 1949, on the site of the former Hooker Creek station. The government moved Walpiri people from Yuendumu, only succeeding on the fourth attempt, after people had simply walked back their own communities on the first three attempts. Humpty Doo is a small town in Australia's Northern Territory, situated just south of the Arnhem Highway, approximately 40 km from Darwin. At the , Humpty Doo had a population of 4,380 people. Gapuwiyak
Gapuwiyak, also known as Lake Evella, is an Aboriginal Australian community located in north-eastern Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, south of the head of Buckingham Bay and about the same distance south-west of Arnhem Bay. The settlement had a population of 871 people recorded at the 2016 census. Gapuwiyak is adjacent to Lake Evella. The lake was seen by Harold Shepherdson from his Miles Hawk aeroplane in 1935 and he named it Lake Evella after his wife Ella, and Eva, the wife of a fellow missionary Rev. T.T. Webb. ''Gapuwiyak'' means "brackish water" (''Gapu'' – water; ''Wiyak'' – salty). The community is serviced by a barge from Darwin once a week that comes up the Buckingham River. Yuendumu is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia, northwest of Alice Springs on the Tanami Road, within the Central Desert Region local government area. It ranks as one of the larger remote communities in central Australia, and has a thriving community of Aboriginal artists. Alyangula is the largest township on Groote Eylandt in the Northern Territory. History Groote Eylandt Mining Company (GEMCO) established Alyangula as the residence for the mining company workers in the late 1960s. Borroloola ( local Aboriginal languages: ''Burrulula'') is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is located on the McArthur River, about 50 km upstream from the Gulf of Carpentaria. Location Borroloola lies on the traditional country of the Yanyuwa people, on the coastal plain between the Barkly Tablelands and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Rivers that run from the Tablelands escarpment to the Gulf regularly flood in the wet season, making travel on the unsealed section of Highway One along the coastal plain to Queensland impossible. Jabiru is a town in the Northern Territory of Australia. Built in 1982, the town is completely surrounded by Kakadu National Park. At the 2016 census, Jabiru had a population of 1,081. Ramingining is an Aboriginal Australian community of mainly Yolngu people in the Northern Territory, Australia, east of Darwin. It is on the edge of the Arafura Swamp in Arnhem Land. Wulkabimirri is a tiny outstation (homeland) nearby, and Murwangi, further south, is part of the Ramingining Homelands.
