A permanent representative is a diplomat who is the head of a country’s diplomatic mission to an international organisation. Organizations that receive permanent representatives from their member states include the United Nations, the World Trade Organization, NATO, the European Union, the African Union, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, and the Organization of American States. Permanent representatives can be sent to subunits or field offices of an organization. For example, in addition to the permanent representatives sent to the United Nations headquarters in New York City, UN member states also appoint permanent representatives to other UN offices, such as those in Geneva, Nairobi, and Vienna. Rüdiger König (born 8 April 1957), is a German diplomat who served as the Permanent Representative of Germany to NATO from 2020 until 2023. From 2015, he was Head of the Department for Crisis Prevention, Stabilisation, Post-Conflict Rehabilitation and Humanitarian Aid at the Federal Foreign Office. After graduating from high school in 1977, König studied political science, constitutional and international law, and sociology at the University of Bonn, graduating with a master's degree. Martin Erdmann (born 25 January 1955) is a German diplomat. Career Erdmann was born in Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He joined the German Foreign Service in 1982. In 1984 he completed his diplomatic-consular state exam and became Personal Assistant of Parliamentary State Secretary (State Minister) Alois Mertes at the Foreign Office, Bonn.
