Tingstäde
Tingstäde is a populated area, a socken (not to be confused with parish), on the Swedish island of Gotland. It comprises the same area as the administrative Tingstäde District, established on 1January 2016. Tingstäde is most noted for its nearby lake Lake Tingstäde, which contains the sunken Bulverket fortification, built, used and abandoned during the 12th century. Geography Tingstäde is the name of the socken as well as the district. It is also the name of the larger locality within the district and the small village surrounding the medieval Tingstäde Church, sometimes referred to as ''Tingstäde kyrkby''. Kräklingbo () is a populated area, a ''socken'' (not to be confused with Parishes of the Church of Sweden, parish), on the Swedish island of Gotland. It comprises the same area as the Registration districts in Sweden, administrative Kräklingbo District, established on 1January 2016. The most visible feature at Kräklingbo is the Torsburgen, a fortified plateau. In 1992, it was the site of a large wildfire. Oscar Malmborg
Frans Oscar Malmborg (February 29, 1820 – April 29, 1880), a veteran of the Mexican–American War, Mexican War, became famous for his ostentatious manner in training recruits for the American Civil War, primarily the 55th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment in which he served. Background Malmborg was born at the Rågåkra farm in Kräklingbo parish on the Baltic Sea island of Gotland in Sweden. He was the son of Captain Pehr Gustaf Malmborg (1777–1828), who had been decorated with the gold medal for bravery after the Battle of Svensksund (1790), Battle of Svensksund in 1790, before he was teenager. Swedish Colony Of Saint Barthélemy
The Swedish colony of Saint Barthélemy existed for nearly a century. In 1784, one of French king Louis XVI's ministers ceded Saint Barthélemy to Sweden in exchange for trading rights in the Swedish port of Gothenburg. Swedish rule lasted until 1878 when the French repurchased the island. Background Following problems experienced by early French settlers, Saint Barthélemy was successfully colonized by French mariners in 1763. Attracted by the island's prosperity during the American Revolutionary War, Gustav III of Sweden agreed to exchange French trading rights in Gothenburg against Swedish colonization of the island. In addition to its fresh water sources, the island produced moderate amounts of cotton, sugar, cocoa, tobacco and fruits while it promised substantial revenue from trade through its natural harbour on the island's west coast. Ernst Von Vegesack
Ernst Mathias Peter von Vegesack (June 18, 1820 – January 12, 1903) was a Swedish Army officer and volunteer in the Union Army during American Civil War and later on was a member of the parliament of Sweden. After his return to Sweden, he was awarded the brevet grade of Brigadier general of volunteers and in 1893 he received the Medal of Honor for bravery in the Battle of Gaines's Mill. Career in Sweden Ernst von Vegesack was born in Hemse on the Baltic island of Gotland to customs inspector, captain and Baron Eberhard von Vegesack (1794–1855) and Ulrica Christina Sophie (née Lythberg). In 1840 he became a second lieutenant of Gotland National Conscription. Two years later he was transferred to Dalarna Regiment and was promoted to lieutenant in 1843. He was educated in surveying and became a land surveyor in Kopparbergs County in 1846. Gotland Museum
The Gotland Museum ( sv, Gotlands museum) (previously known as ''Länsmuseet på Gotland'' or ''Gotlands Fornsal'') in Visby, Sweden, is the county museum of Gotland. It was founded by the Friends of Gotland's Antiquity society in 1875, at the initiative of Pehr Arvid Säve. The museum owns a number of houses and farms on Gotland, some of which are used as museums. Pehr Arvid Säve
Pehr Magnus Arvid Säve (19April 181110November 1887) was a Swedish teacher, cultural historian and artist. He was the initiator of the ''Gotlands Fornvänner'' society and Gotland Museum. Early life and education Säve was born in Roma the son of the provost there, Pehr Säve and his wife Hedvig Lallerius. Säve started out as a teacher in Visby 1835–57, and he soon became a pioneer for the Gotlandic cultural history. Career On the behalf of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities he collected facts about Gotland's heritage, language, geography and culture. He was the academy's curator of antiquities on Gotland and in Västergötland and Östergötland. His notes are collected in six large volumes in Uppsala University Library. Notes made by Säve and his brother, Carl Säve, resulted in a Gotlandic dictionary (''Gotländsk ordbok'') was published in Uppsala in 1936-45.
