Lita Fontaine
Lita Fontaine is an interdisciplinary artist based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Often, her work explores the role of women in past and present Indigenous societies. She describes herself as tri-cultural: Dakota, Anishinaabe and Metis. Early life and education Fontaine grew up in Winnipeg. She received her Diploma from the University of Manitoba School of Art in 2000 and her MFA from what is now the First Nations University of Canada in Regina in 2005. She was a sessional instructor for the University of Manitoba’s School of Art, teaching Foundation Drawing. Her sister, Leah Fontaine, is also an interdisciplinary artist and arts Educator. Lindsay Shearer-Nelko (born April 10, 1986 in Winnipeg) is a Canadian-born choreographer of such television shows as FOX's ' So You Think You Can Dance' (Season 10) and ' The X Factor' (associate choreographer). Early life Shearer-Nelko, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, went to high school in that city while training at her mother’s dance studio, Shelley Shearer School of Dance. She achieved her ISTD advanced ballet certification from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and then completed the CAP 21 - Drama Department Musical Theater Program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Bev Pike
Bev Pike is a Winnipeg-based visual artist who paints large (2.5 x 6.1 m/8 x 20 ft) cinematic baroque landforms. Grottesque, her current work on climate catastrophe, is a series of interconnected underground sanctuaries based on seventeenth century English shell grottos. Education Bev Pike graduated from the Alberta College of Art and Design and took post-graduate studies in fine art at the University of Alberta. Kent Monkman
Kent Monkman (born 13 November 1965) is a Canadian First Nations artist of Cree ancestry. He is a member of the Fisher River band situated in Manitoba's Interlake Region. He is both a visual as well as performance artist, working in a variety of media such as painting, film/video, and installation. In the early 2000s, Monkman developed his gender-fluid alter ego, Miss Chief Eagle Testickle, who has since appeared in many of his works. He has had many solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in Canada, the United States, and Europe. He has achieved international recognition for his colourful and richly detailed combining of disparate genre conventions, and for his recasting of historical narrative. Leo Mol
Leonid Molodozhanyn, known as Leo Mol, (January 15, 1915 – July 4, 2009) was a Ukrainian Canadian stained glass artist, painter and sculptor. History Born Leonid Molodozhanyn in Polonne, Russian Empire (now Ukraine), Mol learned the art of ceramics in his father's pottery workshop. Mol studied sculpture at the Leningrad Academy of Arts from 1936 to 1940. Following the German invasion of the Soviet Union he was deported to Germany where he was influenced by Arno Breker. In 1945, he moved to The Hague, and in December, 1948, he and his wife, Margareth (whom he married in 1943), emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1949, he held his first ceramics exhibition in Winnipeg. Mol was known for his sculptures of square dancers, skiers, aboriginals, and wildlife. Royal Winnipeg Ballet
The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is Canada's oldest ballet company and the longest continuously operating ballet company in North America. History It was founded in 1939 as the "Winnipeg Ballet Club" by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally (who also founded the ballet school The Canadian School of Ballet in British Columbia). The name was changed to the "Winnipeg Ballet" in 1941 and the company began touring Canada in 1945. In 1948, with the initiative of the Winnipeg Ballet, the Canadian Ballet Festival was formed. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet was granted its royal title in 1953, the first granted under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It completed its first American tour in 1954. Gweneth Lloyd
Gweneth Lloyd, OC (September 15, 1901 - January 1, 1993) was a co-founder of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, a ballet teacher and choreographer. Lloyd was born in Eccles, Lancashire, United Kingdom. She attended The Perse School in Cambridge, but began taking dance when she attended Northwood College. In 1927 she and Doris McBride open their own dance school in Leeds. It was here that Lloyd met student Betty Farrally(née Hey) who would accompany Lloyd to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1938. They opened the Canadian School of Ballet on Portage Avenue and shortly afterwards founded the Winnipeg Ballet Club, that in 1953 became the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Wanda Koop
Wanda Koop is a Canadian interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Life Koop was born on November 5, 1951 in Vancouver, British Columbia, to Russian Mennonite parents who had escaped the Russian Revolution. Koop graduated from the Lemoine FitzGerald School of Art, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg in 1973. In 2002 Koop was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal, in 2005 she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, in 2006 she was appointed a member of the Order of Canada, and in 2016 she received the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts. Francis Hans Johnston
Francis Hans Johnston (also known as Frank H. Johnston and as Franz Johnston) (June 19, 1888July 9, 1949) was a member of the Group of Seven. Life and career Frank Johnston was born on June 19, 1888 in Toronto, the son of Hugh Hans and Mary Elizabeth (Roderick) Johnston. He was educated at Central Technical School in Toronto, studying with Gustav Hahn, and the Central Ontario School of Art with William Cruikshank and George Agnew Reid. In 1908, he joined Grip Ltd. as a commercial artist. In 1910, he left for the United States where he studied art in Philadelphia and worked in commercial design in New York.
