Darwin ( ; Larrakia: ) is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. With an estimated population of 147,255 as of 2019, the city contains the majority of the residents of the sparsely populated Northern Territory. It is the smallest, wettest, and most northerly of the Australian capital cities and serves as the Top End's regional centre. Darwin's proximity to Southeast Asia makes the city's location a key link between Australia and countries such as Indonesia and East Timor. Gilbert McAdam
Gilbert McAdam (born 30 March 1967 in Alice Springs) is an Indigenous Australian former Australian rules football player and one of three McAdam brothers to play in the Australian Football League (AFL). Playing career Early career McAdam grew up in Alice Springs, where his father was president of the South Alice Football Club. His older brother, Greg McAdam, had earlier found his way to the St Kilda Football Club via North Adelaide in the SANFL. McAdam moved to Darwin to play in the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) with the Southern Districts Football Club when he was just 11 years old. In 1979, Gilbert McAdam was chosen as the 12-year-old schoolboys Northern Territory captain who captained the team to victory to become the first Northern Territory team to win a national title. Matthew Whelan
Matthew Whelan (born 13 November 1979) is a former professional Australian rules football player. Wearing the number 45 jersey, Whelan, recruited from the Northern Territory was reliable defender/ back pocket known by Demons fans as "Wheels". He also earned the nickname "Wrecker" (after Whelan the Wrecker) for his big hits (often on big name players) and tough and uncompromisingly defensive style of play. Hamilton Thorp
Hamilton Thorp (born 21 August 1973) is an Australian former professional football player. Early life Thorp is one of a small number of professional footballers to grow up in Darwin. Career Club In the early 1990s Thorp moved to England, where he spent a season with Rochdale. Thorp played in the FAS Premier League as a teenager for Darwin Cubs. In 1997, Thorp signed for English Football League First Division side Portsmouth on the recommendation of then-Australia manager Terry Venables. He played seven league matches and two Football League Cup games for the side, scoring one goal. He later returned to Australia, moving from Perth Glory to Parramatta Power in 2000. John Tambouras
John Tambouras (born 30 January 1979 in Darwin, Australia) is a retired Australian footballer. Club career Tambouras attracted the attention of South Melbourne F.C. who signed him on as a teenager and it was with them that he gained his first experience of playing in a semi professional environment. He then went abroad and played in his parents' country of Greece for Kalamata. During his time here, he played against Olympiacos in the Intertoto Cup which was drawn 1–1. Following his time in Greece he was signed by New Zealand's only professional side, the Auckland Kingz for the 2003–2004 Australian NSL season. Mathew Stokes (born 22 November 1984) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played with the Geelong Football Club and the Essendon Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Cameron Stokes is a former Australian rules football player who played with the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League. Stokes was recruited to the Hawks via the 2008 AFL rookie draft, selected at pick 54. Horrie Seden (born 6 April 1946) is an Australian former professional darts player who played in British Darts Organisation (BDO) events in the 1980s. Career Born in Darwin, Northern Territory, Seden won the 1984 Australian Grand Masters and played in the 1984 Winmau World Masters, losing in the first round to Ceri Morgan. Maurice Joseph Rioli Sr. (1 September 195725 December 2010) was an Australian rules footballer who represented St Mary's Football Club in the Northern Territory Football League (NTFL), in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and in the Victorian Football League. Daniel Rioli (born 16 April 1997) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Richmond Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He is a three-time premiership player with the club and in 2017 he received the award for the AFL's Goal of the Year. Early life and junior football Rioli was born in Fremantle, Western Australia and grew up in Pirlangimpi on Melville Island, among the Tiwi Islands of the Northern Territory. Cyril Rioli (born 14 July 1989) is a former Australian rules football player who played with the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League. Rioli was a member of four premiership teams and the Norm Smith Medallist from the 2015 AFL Grand Final.
