Albrecht Dürer (; ; hu, Ajtósi Adalbert; 21 May 1471 – 6 April 1528),Müller, Peter O. (1993) ''Substantiv-Derivation in Den Schriften Albrecht Dürers'', Walter de Gruyter. . sometimes spelled in English as Durer (without an umlaut) or Duerer, was a German painter, printmaker, and theorist of the German Renaissance. Born in Nuremberg, Dürer established his reputation and influence across Europe in his twenties due to his high-quality woodcut prints. He was in contact with the major Italian artists of his time, including Raphael, Giovanni Bellini, and Leonardo da Vinci, and from 1512 was patronized by Emperor Maximilian I. Dürer's vast body of work includes engravings, his preferred technique in his later prints, altarpieces, portraits and self-portraits, watercolours and books. Dresden Altarpiece
The ''Dresden Altarpiece'' is a triptych by the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer, executed between 1496 and 1497, and perhaps continued in 1503–1504. It is housed in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister of Dresden, Germany. History The painting was one of the first commissions received from Frederick III, Elector of Saxony, together with the ''Seven Sorrows Polyptych'' and the ''Portrait of Frederick III of Saxony''. Dürer knew the elector during the latter's short stay in Nuremberg in April 1496. The work was destined to the chapel in the Wittenberg Castle and, initially, should include only the central panel with a ''Virgin and Child''. Städel
The Städel, officially the ''Städelsches Kunstinstitut und Städtische Galerie'', is an art museum in Frankfurt, with one of the most important collections in Germany. The Städel Museum owns 3,100 paintings, 660 sculptures, more than 4,600 photographs and more than 100,000 drawings and prints. It has around 4,000 m2 of display and a library of 115,000 books. The Städel was honoured as "Museum of the Year 2012" by the German art critics association AICA. In the same year the museum recorded the highest attendance figures in its history, of 447,395 visitors. In 2020 the museum had 318,732 visitors, down 45 percent from 2019, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It ranked 71st on the list of most-visited art museums in 2020. ''Portrait of Dürer's Father at 70'' (or ''The Painter's Father'') is a 1497 oil on lime painting attributed to the German painter and printmaker Albrecht Dürer, now in the National Gallery, London. Along with the 1490 '' Albrecht Dürer the Elder with a Rosary'', it is the second of two portraits of the artist's Hungarian father Albrecht Dürer the Elder (1427–1502). Alte Pinakothek
The Alte Pinakothek (, ''Old Pinakothek'') is an art museum located in the Kunstareal area in Munich, Germany. It is one of the oldest galleries in the world and houses a significant collection of Old Master paintings. The name Alte (Old) Pinakothek refers to the time period covered by the collection—from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. The Neue Pinakothek, re-built in 1981, covers nineteenth-century art, and Pinakothek der Moderne, opened in 2002, exhibits modern art. All three galleries are part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, an organization of the Free state of Bavaria. The building King Ludwig I of Bavaria ordered Leo von Klenze to erect a new building for the gallery for the Wittelsbach collection in 1826. Seven Sorrows Polyptych
The ''Seven Sorrows Polyptych'' is an oil on panel painting by Albrecht Dürer. The painting includes a central picture (108 x 43 cm), currently at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, and seven surrounding panels (measuring some 60 x 46 cm) which are exhibited at the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister of Dresden. Description The work was commissioned by Frederick III, Elector of Saxony, not a long time after his meeting with Dürer at Nuremberg in April 1496. Stylistic considerations suggest that the artist started to work on the painting only from around 1500. Modern scholars tend to attribute to Dürer only the central panel, the others having been executed by his pupils based on his drawings.
