Soca Dance
"Soca Dance" is a 1990 song written and recorded by the artist Charles D. Lewis. It was released as a single from his album ''Do You Feel It'' and became a summer hit, topping the charts in France and Belgium. The song also gave its name to the dance performed on it. Background and writing In France, in 1989, TF1 had sponsored Kaoma's "Lambada", which was huge success presented by the TV channel as the summer hit. TF1 decided to repeat the experience seeking a new song combining exoticism and suggestive dance. Finally, "Soca Dance" was chosen.. The song was written by the singer Charles D. Lewis himself (he also composed the music) and Gary Gordon-Smith who also produced it. Chart performances In France, "Soca Dance" went straight to number 12 on the chart edition of 14 July 1990, climbed to number seven, then was blocked at number two by Zouk Machine's hit "Maldòn" for consecutive two weeks. "Petit Frank" is a 1989 song recorded by the French singer and songwriter François Feldman. It was the fourth single from his 1989 album, '' Une Présence'', and was released on 6 October 1990. As for the previous three singles from the album, " Joue pas", "Les Valses de Vienne" and " C'est toi qui m'as fait", it had a great success in France, reaching the top of the SNEP chart, thus becoming Feldman's second number one hit. Later, it was included on Feldman's three best of compilations, ''Two Feldman'' (1996), ''Best Feldman'' (1998) and ''Gold'' (2008); it was also performed during Feldman's 1991 tour and was thus included on the live album ''Feldman à Bercy'' (1992). In the late 1990, it was released as a single from the band's seventh album, released in 1988, ''Descanso dominical'', on which it appears as the third track. It became a hit in France, hitting number one for seven weeks. Also in 1990, the song was notably covered by the pop duo formed by Argentine singers Sandra Mihanovich and Celeste Carballo as the title track of their studio album ''Mujer contra mujer'', which is regarded as a landmark by the country's lesbian community. In 2003, the song was also covered by Saya, becoming a top ten hit in France. Mecano
Mecano was a Spanish pop band formed in 1981 and active until 1992. Mecano became one of the most successful Spanish pop bands of all time. The band is still the best-selling Spanish band, with over 25 million records worldwide. They were considered by some to be avant-garde for their time and part of la Movida Madrileña countercultural movement. They had a brief comeback in 1998. The band's line-up was singer Ana Torroja and brothers Nacho and José María Cano, who worked alongside session musicians such as Arturo Terriza, Manolo Aguilar, Nacho Mañó, Javier Quílez, Ángel Celada and Óscar Astruga. The trio's musical career spanned two distinct stages. "Kingston Town" is a 1970 song by Lord Creator released as a single on producer Clancy Eccles' Clandisc label. It was also recorded in 1989 by reggae group UB40 and was released as the second single from their album ''Labour of Love II'', reaching number four on the UK Singles Chart and number one in France and the Netherlands. In June 2007, the copyright holders of the song, Sparta Florida Music Group, started legal action against Paris Hilton and Warner Chappell Music for plagiarism due to alleged similarities between "Kingston Town" and Hilton's song "Stars Are Blind". It was wrongly stated that UB40 was the suing party, which the band later confirmed as being incorrect on their website. UB40 are an English reggae and pop band, formed in December 1978 in Birmingham, England.
