Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=137681 on 2015-04-29 Distribution and habitat These snails can be found worldwide. They live usually in brackish water and salt marshes of tropical and temperate regions, at beaches, in water and at land. Description These are very small to medium large snails, between 2 and 13 mm). Some adults do not exceed a size of 3 mm. The shape of the thin shells is somewhat ovately conical. The margin of the aperture is simple. The operculum is in most cases horny. The eyes are at the end of short, stout stalks. They feed on vegetable detritus and small algae. They lay their eggs in the mud, and hatch as free-swimming larvae. Species According to the World Register of ...

Laevicaulis Stuhlmanni
''Laevicaulis stuhlmanni'' is a species of terrestrial, nocturnal slug in the family Veronicellidae. It is native to parts of tropical Africa. Description ''Laevicaulis stuhlmanni'' shows a flattened body and a dark to light brown colour. Adults are on average 45 mm long and 15.5 mm wide. The weight of an adult averages around 3.5 g. Feeding habits ''Laevicaulis stuhlmanni'' is a grazer and detritus feeder. Distribution ''Laevicaulis stuhlmanni'' occurs naturally in tropical regions of Africa, including Congo Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It has been introduced to Egypt, where it is viewed as a serious agricultural pest. Life cycle In Egypt the reproductive season of ''Leavicaulis stuhlmanni'' starts in March or April, when the temperature rises, and lasts until November. They are hermaphrodites and self-fertilization is common. During the oviposition The ovipositor is a tube-like organ used by some animals, especially insects, for the laying of eggs. In insects ...

Laevicaulis Alte
''Laevicaulis alte'', or the tropical leatherleaf, is a species of tropical land slug, a terrestrial pulmonate gastropod mollusk in the family Veronicellidae, the leatherleaf slugs. Description ''Laevicaulis alte'' is a round, dark-coloured slug with no shell, long. Its skin is slightly tuberculated. The central keel is beige in colour. This slug has a unique, very narrow foot; juvenile specimens have a foot wide and adult specimens have a foot that is only wide. The tentacles are small, long, and they are only rarely extended beyond the edge of the mantle. Parasites This slug is an intermediate host for ''Angiostrongylus cantonensis'', the rat lungworm, a round worm, the most common cause of eosinophilic meningoencephalitis. Predators ''Laevicaulis alte'' is eaten by the frog '' Rana tigrina''. Distribution The species is probably indigenous to Africa, both western Africa and eastern Africa, particularly Tanzania.Rowson B., Warren B. H. & Ngereza C. F. (2010). "Ter ...

Veronicellidae
The Veronicellidae, also known by their common name the leatherleaf slugs, are a family of pulmonate terrestrial slugs. The herbivorous molluscs occur mainly in the tropical and subtropical areas of America, Asia and Africa. They act as intermediate hosts of the rat lung worm ''Angiostrongylus costaricensis'', and act as a vector for other human diseases. They also cause significant damage to crops. Description The dorsal surface of these slugs is entirely covered by the mantle or hyponota. These mollusks have a posterior located anus, eyes on contractile (not retractile) tentacles, and no lung or pulmonary organ. In these aspects they are anatomically distinct from most other types of terrestrial slugs, which typically belong to the order Stylommatophora, and which have a forward located anus, and retractile tentacles. The closely related members of the family Onchidiidae differ from the Veronicellidae by having a pulmonary sac, or lung. Distribution Members of the famil ...

Tropidophora Zanguebarica
''Tropidophora'' is a genus of land snails with an operculum, terrestrial gastropod mollusks in the family Pomatiidae.Rowson B., Warren B. H. & Ngereza C. F. (2010). "Terrestrial molluscs of Pemba Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania, and its status as an "oceanic" island". ''ZooKeys'' 70: 1-39. . MolluscaBase eds. (2020). MolluscaBase. Tropidophora Troschel, 1847. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=995130 on 2020-09-30 Distribution These large, split-sole snails are found in Tanzania, Madagascar, the Mascarenes, the Comoros and South Africa. 95-99% of ''Tropidophora'' species are endemic to Madagascar. Species The present classification of this genus into three subgenera, 95 species and 142 varieties is complex and confused. This classification is best ignored temporarily, as it is based on subtle morphological varieties among small samples. It is also assumed that many smaller species remain to be discovered ...

Pomatiidae
The family Pomatiidae is a taxonomic family of small operculate land snails, terrestrial gastropod mollusks that can be found over the warmer parts of the Old World. In the older literature, this family is designated as Pomatiasidae. This family is a lineage closely related to the Littorinidae (periwinkles) common in coastal habitat. They have adapted to terrestrial life and are thus sometimes called "land winkles". They are defined by a chalky operculum at the rear end of the body, the shape of their thick shell and their mouth and a characteristic spiral sculpture. The sexes are separate and can sometimes be recognised because the female shell is slightly larger than the male shell. Taxonomy According to the Taxonomy of the Gastropoda (Bouchet & Rocroi, 2005), the family Pomatiidae consisted of two subfamilies: *subfamily Pomatiinae Newton, 1891 (1828) - synonyms: Cyclostomatidae Menke, 1828; Cyclotopsinae Kobelt & Möllendorff, 1898; Ericiidae Wenz, 1915 *subfamily Annular ...

Pemba Island
Pemba Island ( ar, الجزيرة الخضراء ''al-Jazīra al-khadrā'', literally "The Green Island"; sw, Pemba kisiwa) is a Tanzanian island forming part of the Zanzibar Archipelago, lying within the Swahili Coast in the Indian Ocean. Geography file:Map of Zanzibar Archipelago-en.svg, left, The main islands of the Zanzibar Archipelago: Unguja (left) and Pemba (right) With a land area of it is situated about to the north of Unguja, the largest island of the archipelago. In 1964, Zanzibar was united with the former colony of Tanganyika (1961–1964), Tanganyika to form Tanzania. It lies east of mainland Tanzania, across the Pemba Channel. Together with Mafia Island (south of Unguja), these islands form the Spice Islands (not to be confused with the Maluku Islands of Indonesia). Most of the island, which is hillier and more fertile than Unguja, is dominated by small scale farming. There is also large scale farming of cash crops such as cloves. In previous years, the islan ...
