E. G. Paley was an English architect who practised from an office in Lancaster, Lancashire in the 19th century. In 1838 he joined Edmund Sharpe as a pupil and became Sharpe's partner in 1845. The practice was then known as "Sharpe and Paley, Architects". Sharpe retired from the practice in 1851 and Paley worked as the only principal in the business until he was joined by Hubert Austin as a partner in 1868. This list contains the works on buildings and structures other than churches which was carried out by the practice during the time that E. G. Paley was the only principal in the practice, as identified by Price. It includes houses and schools, and a variety of other structures. Dalton Hall (Cumbria)
Dalton Hall is a country house near Burton-in-Kendal in northern England. The hall lies within the county palatine of Lancaster, while Burton lies in the historic county of Westmorland. Both have formed part of Cumbria since 1974. The hall has been in the ownership of the Hornby family since the late 18th century. Major additions were made to the large Georgian mansion in 1859–60 by Edmund Geoffrey Stanley Hornby (1839-1923), a Deputy Lieutenant for Lancashire, son and heir of Edmund Hornby (1773-1857), MP, to the designs of the Lancaster architect Edward Graham Paley. The building was demolished in 1968 and replaced in 1968–72 by a much smaller new house designed by Clough Williams-Ellis, his last commission. Pevsner described it as "a stately doll's house" which "sits inside the ghost of its predecessor". Clapham, North Yorkshire
Clapham is a village in the civil parish of Clapham cum Newby in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. It was previously in the West Riding of Yorkshire. It lies within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, north-west of Settle, and just off the A65 road. History The church of St James in Clapham was founded in Norman times, and originally dedicated to St Michael. It is mentioned in records dating back to 1160. The village and church were burned during a Scottish raid following the Battle of Bannockburn in the early 14th century. The Furness Railway (Furness) was a railway company operating in the Furness area of Lancashire in North West England. History Formation In the early 1840s, the owners of iron ore mines in the Furness district of Lancashire became interested in a waggonway from their mines to Barrow; the project was adopted and expanded by the Duke of Buccleuch and the Earl of Burlington. Barrow-in-Furness is a railway station on the Cumbrian Coast Line and Furness Line, south-west of Carlisle and north-west of Lancaster, in the town of Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria. Coniston Railway
The Coniston Railway was a railway in Cumbria, England, linking Coniston and Broughton-in-Furness, which ran for over 100 years between the middle of the 19th to the middle of the 20th century. It was originally designed for the transport of slate and copper ore from the mines near Coniston to the coast and later developed into a line for tourists to the Lake District. The line opened in 1859 and closed in 1962. Coniston Railway Station, Cumbria
Coniston railway station was the northern terminus of the Coniston branch line in the village of Coniston, Lancashire, England (now in Cumbria). History Authorised by Parliament in August 1857 the line to Coniston was open less than two years later in June 1859. The station building was designed by the Lancaster architect E. G. Paley in Swiss chalet style. The station was enlarged between 1888 and 1892 at a cost of over £4,000 (equivalent to £ in ). War Memorial, Lancaster Cemetery
The War Memorial, Lancaster Cemetery, was built to commemorate those lost in the Crimean War. It was erected in 1860, and designed by the local architect E. G. Paley. Its estimated cost was £120–140, but Paley made no charge for it. The monument is constructed in carboniferous limestone and consists of an obelisk on three steps. Its inscriptions include the names of the local men who died in the war. The obelisk stands high. The monument is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.
