List of motorcycles of the 1910s is a listing of motorcycles of the 1910s, including those on sale, introduced, or otherwise relevant in this period. The 1910s has their share of expensive historic motorcycles sold at auction, especially the brands Cyclone and Flying Merkel. A 1915 Cyclone Board Track Racer went for US$852,500 at an auction in 2015, one of the just 12 that survived; another of this model sold for $551,200 in 2008. A 1911 Flying Merkel Board Track Racer went for $423,500 in 2015 and a 1911 Flying Merkel for $201,250 in 2011. A 1911 Harley-Davidson 7D went for $283,400 in 2014. The $850k for the Cyclone Board Track was the highest price yet known to be paid publicly for a motorcycle auction (of any decade). Indian Model O
The Indian Model O was a lightweight motorcycle made by the Hendee Manufacturing Company from 1917 to 1919. Indian expected to sell the Model O to young or thrifty riders. The United States' entry into World War I caused Indian to shift manufacture to military motorcycles, and the low cost of the Ford Model T caused the market for lightweight motorcycles to collapse. Concept and design The Model O was designed as an entry-level motorcycle to attract young riders. It replaced the two-stroke single-cylinder Model K Featherweight, which was made in 1916 only. In a layout similar to contemporary Douglas motorcycles from Great Britain, the Model O's flathead flat-twin engine was mounted with its cylinders along the line of the frame. Wanderer (company)
Wanderer was a German manufacturer of bicycles, motorcycles, automobiles, vans and other machinery. Established as ''Winklhofer & Jaenicke'' in 1896 by Johann Baptist Winklhofer and Richard Adolf Jaenicke, the company used the ''Wanderer'' brand name from 1911, making civilian automobiles until 1941 and military vehicles until 1945. Today the brand is part of the Zweirad Einkaufs Genossenschaft (ZEG). History ''Winklhofer & Jaenicke'' was established in 1896 in Chemnitz. It built motorcycles from 1902 and automobiles from 1903. Triumph Model H
The Triumph Model H (also known as the 'Type H' and 'the Trusty') is a British motorcycle made by Triumph Engineering Co Ltd in Coventry, England. A total of 57,000 Triumph Model H motorcycles were made from 1915 until production ended in 1923. Development At the start of the First World War in 1914 the British Government needed effective communications with front line troops and replaced messengers on horses with despatch riders on motorcycles. A number of models were tested for suitability and the Triumph Model H was selected. Thor Model U
Thor Model U was a motorcycle that debuted in the 1910s with a 7 hp V-twin in the Thor marque of Aurora Automatic Machinery Company of Illinois. The 1913 model came with a 61 ci (cubic inch) V-twin engine, with the V at an angle of 50 degrees. In 1914 the engine size was increased from 61ci to 76.25ci The motorcycle had chain drive with clutch and was overall a bicycle configuration with two handle bars and seat above a frame which housed the engine and connected the front and back. The V-twin has an angle of 50 degrees. By 1916, the Model U was essentially the "flagship" of the Thor lineup with a large 50 degree V-twin with mechanical valves, a magneto ignition, and a three speed transmission. Sears Dreadnought
Sears Dreadnought was a motorcycle sold by Sears in the 1910s. The motorcycle featured a V-twin made by Spacke. It was sourced from Spacke's cyclecar and had . This engine was also used by Dayton, Eagle, Minneapolis and Crawford. In addition to the internal combustion engine, it also had foot-pedals like a regular bicycle. (This was for getting the engine started as the kick start had not been invented yet.) The motorcycle was designed for Sears in conjunction with Excelsior Company of N. Sangamon Street, Chicago. JA Prestwich Industries, was a British engineering equipment manufacturing company named after founder John Alfred Prestwich, which was formed in 1951 by the amalgamation of J.A.Prestwich and Company Limited and Pencils Ltd. Rover (motorcycles)
The Rover Company was a British bicycle and motorcycle manufacturer before it began the manufacture of motor cars. Rover was established in 1878 by John Kemp Starley in Coventry to produce bicycles. The company developed and produced the ''Rover Imperial'' motorcycle in November 1902. Between 1903 and 1924, Rover produced more than 10,000 motorcycles. History In June 1896 John Starley formed the Rover Cycle Co. Ltd. in Coventry. The Pope Model L was a motorcycle produced by Pope Manufacturing Company in Westfield, Massachusetts, between 1914 and 1920. The Model L was, at , the fastest motorcycle in the world when introduced. The Peugeot 500 M (1913-1914) was a French racing motorcycle designed by Ernest Henry in 1913. It was a "technical tour de force" as the first motorcycle ever designed with a dual overhead camshaft. It also used a multi-valve cylinder head, with four valves per cylinder.
