The United States Minister to Hawaii was an office of the United States Department of State to the Kingdom of Hawaii during the period of 1810 to 1898. Appointed by the President of the United States with the consent of Congress, the Minister to Hawaii was equivalent in rank to the present-day ambassador of the United States to foreign governments. As principal envoy of the United States government to the monarch of Hawaii, the Minister to Hawaii often dealt in affairs relating to economic, military and political matters affecting both nations. The Republic of Hawaii ( Hawaiian: ''Lepupalika o Hawaii'') was a short-lived one-party state in Hawaii between July 4, 1894, when the Provisional Government of Hawaii had ended, and August 12, 1898, when it became annexed by the United States as an organized incorporated territory of the United States. In 1893 the Committee of Public Safety overthrew Kingdom of Hawaii Queen Liliuokalani after she rejected the 1887 Bayonet Constitution. The Committee of Public Safety intended for Hawaii to be annexed by the United States but President Grover Cleveland, a Democrat opposed to imperialism, refused. Luther Severance
Luther Severance (October 26, 1797 – January 25, 1855) was a United States representative and diplomat from Maine. Life He was born in Montague, Massachusetts on October 26, 1797. He moved with his parents to Cazenovia, New York in 1799. He attended the common schools, and learned the printer's trade in Peterboro, New York. He established the Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Maine in 1825. He was elected a member of the Maine House of Representatives, and served in the Maine State Senate. He was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth Congresses in the United States House of Representatives (March 4, 1843–March 3, 1847). He was vice president of the Whig National Convention in 1848. He served as United States commissioner (diplomatic rank similar to that of Ambassador) to the Kingdom of Hawaii 1850 through the end of 1853. He died in Augusta, Maine on January 25, 1855. Charles Eames (20 March 1812, in New Braintree, Massachusetts – 16 March 1867, in Washington, D. C.) was an American lawyer and diplomat. He was prepared for College at Leicester Academy, was graduated at Harvard in 1831, and studied law in the Cambridge Law School, and with John Duer in New York. But ill health prevented him from practicing his profession, and in 1845 he accepted an office in the navy department in Washington. Abner Pratt (May 22, 1801 – March 27, 1863) was an American lawyer, politician, diplomat, and jurist. Born in Springfield, Otsego County, New York, Pratt studied law and was admitted to the New York bar. Pratt served as district attorney in Rochester, New York. In 1839, Pratt moved to Marshall, Michigan and continued to practice law. In 1844 and 1845, Pratt served in the Michigan State Senate. From 1850 until 1857, Pratt served on the Michigan Supreme Court and served as chief justice of the court. Benjamin Franklin Angel (November 28, 1815 – September 11, 1894) was an American lawyer, politician and diplomat. Life Benjamin Franklin Angel was born in Burlington, New York, the son of Benjamin Angel and Abigail (Stickney) Angel. He studied law, was admitted to the bar, and commenced practice in Geneseo. He was Surrogate of Livingston County from 1836 to 1840 and from 1844 to 1847. He married Julia Jones. He was a delegate to the 1852 Democratic National Convention at Baltimore. In 1853, his health having become impaired, he accepted an appointment as United States Consul at Honolulu, then in the Kingdom of Hawaii. Elisha Hunt Allen (January 28, 1804 – January 1, 1883) was an American congressman, lawyer and diplomat, and judge and diplomat for the Kingdom of Hawaii. Early life Elisha Hunt Allen was born January 28, 1804, in New Salem, Massachusetts. His father was Massachusetts minister, lawyer, and politician Samuel Clesson Allen (1772–1842) and mother was Mary (née Hunt) Allen (1774–1833). He attended New Salem Academy and graduated from Williams College in 1823. Career Allen was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced practice in Brattleboro, Vermont.
