Birchtree Mine
Birchtree Mine is an underground nickel mine, owned and operated by Vale Inco in the city of Thompson, Manitoba, Canada. It lies in the nickel containing Thompson Belt, a geologic feature associated with the Circum-Superior Belt large igneous province throughout the Superior craton. History Birchtree mine originally opened in 1965 until 1978 when it was put in "standby" until 1988. The mine reopened again in 1989. In 2000, Inco authorized US$48 million to deepen the mine to , expanding production to 3,800 tons per day. The Deepening Project allowed Inco to access ore between the 3950 level and 2300 level. Nickel is a chemical element with symbol Ni and atomic number 28. It is a silvery-white lustrous metal with a slight golden tinge. Nickel is a hard and ductile transition metal. Tanco Mine or Bernic Lake mine is an underground caesium and tantalum mine, owned and since 2019 owned and operated by Sinomine Resource Group on the north west shore of Bernic Lake, Manitoba, Canada. The mine has the largest known deposit of pollucite and is also the world's largest producer of caesium. The mine has the largest tantalum reserves in Canada having estimated reserves of 2.1 million tonnes of ore grading 0.22% tantalum. The mine also has additional reserves amounting to 7.3 million tonnes of ore grading 2.76% lithium. The mine also produces caesium brine, which is converted into caesium formate which is used mostly as additive for drilling fluids to increase the fluid's density. Wabowden
Wabowden is a community in northern Manitoba. It is situated on Provincial Trunk Highway No. 6, which is the main route between Thompson and the provincial capital, Winnipeg. History The community originated in the early 20th century as a service point on the Hudson Bay Railway. Although the railway's presence in Wabowden has diminished over time, it continues to serve the community by transporting freight and passengers to the Wabowden railway station. Sherridon
Sherridon, Manitoba is an unincorporated community in Manitoba, Canada. History Sherridon originated as the service centre for the nearby Sherritt Gordon nickel mines. The mine closed in 1952, resulting in the equipment and many of the workers and families relocating to Lynn Lake. In 1949 the first house from Sherridon was sleighed to Lynn Lake as a test run over the of cat train trails. Over the next three years, 208 buildings were moved to Lynn Lake from Sherridon. Houses, stores, banks and churches were loaded on sleighs and pulled by caterpillar tractors over the ice and snow to Lynn Lake. The historic four-storey Hotel Cambrian, one of the only early 20th century buildings in the community not moved to Lynn Lake, was destroyed by fire on June 2, 2012.
