Knesset
The Knesset ( he, הַכְּנֶסֶת ; "gathering" or "assembly") is the unicameral legislature of Israel. As the supreme state body, the Knesset is sovereign and thus has complete control of the entirety of the Israeli government (with the exception of checks and balances from the courts and local governments). The Knesset passes all laws, elects the president and prime minister (although the latter is ceremonially appointed by the President), approves the cabinet, and supervises the work of the government, among other things. In addition, the Knesset elects the state comptroller. It also has the power to waive the immunity of its members, remove the president and the state comptroller from office, dissolve the government in a constructive vote of no confidence, and to dissolve itself and call new elections. Meir Cohen-Avidov
Meir Cohen-Avidov (, 18 February 1926 – 4 March 2015) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud between 1974 and 1988. Biography Born in Haifa during the Mandate era, Cohen-Avidov studied at the School for Jurisprudence and Economics in Tel Aviv, and was certified as a lawyer. He joined the Irgun in 1943 and began working for Haifa City Council in 1945. Between 1946 and 1948 he was imprisoned by the British Authorities. In 1961 he became the city council's comptroller, a role he held until 1966. Between 1969 and 1973 he was an elected member of the council. A member of Herut's central committee and directorate, in 1973 he was elected to the Knesset on the Likud list, an alliance of Herut, the Liberal Party and several other small right-wing parties. David Levy (Israeli Politician)
David Levy ( he, דוד לוי, born 21 December 1937) is an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset between 1969 and 2006, as well as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Immigrant Absorption, Minister of Housing and Construction and as a Minister without Portfolio. Although most of his time as a Knesset member was spent with Likud, he also led the breakaway Gesher faction, which formed part of Ehud Barak's Labor-led government between 1999 and 2001. Eliezer Kulas (, born 29 August 1944) is an Israeli former politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud between 1981 and 1988. Biography Born in Kyzylorda in the Soviet Union (today in Kazakhstan), Kulas made aliyah to Israel in 1948. He attended the Hugim high school in Haifa, before studying economics, statistics and law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and was certified as a lawyer. In 1962 he joined the Liberal Party. He worked as a senior advisor to the Minister of Housing and Construction, and served as director of the ministerial bureau between 1977 and 1978. Haim Kaufman
Haim Kaufman ( he, חיים קופמן, 12 December 1934 – 7 August 1995) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud between 1977 and 1988, and again from 1990 until his death in 1995. Biography Born in Tel Aviv during the Mandate era, Leket served in the Artillery Corps during his national service in the IDF. He studied law at the School of Law and Economics in Tel Aviv, and later worked as a corporate director. A member of Herut, Kaufman chaired the party's youth group and the Dor Hemsheh group within it. He was on the Likud list (an alliance of Herut and several other right-wing parties) for the 1973 elections, but failed to win a seat. Moshe Katsav
Moshe Katsav ( he, מֹשֶׁה קַצָּב; born 5 December 1945) is an Israeli former politician who was the List of Presidents of Israel, eighth President of Israel from 2000 to 2007. He was also a leading Likud member of the Israeli Knesset and a minister in its Cabinet of Israel, cabinet. He was the second Mizrahi Jew to be elected to presidency, after Yitzhak Navon. The end of his presidency was marked by controversy, stemming from allegations of rape of one female subordinate and sexual harassment of others. Pesah Grupper (; 21 August 1924 – 29 April 2013) was an Israeli politician who served as Minister of Agriculture between October 1983 and September 1984. Biography Grupper was born in Tel Aviv during the Mandate era. He served as head of Atlit local council between 1959 and 1962 and again from 1969 until 1971. He was elected to the Knesset on Likud's list in 1973, and retained his seat in elections in 1977 and 1981. In August 1981 he was appointed Deputy Minister of Agriculture, a role he held until 1983, when he became Minister of Agriculture in Yitzhak Shamir's government. Although re-elected in 1984, he lost his place in the cabinet. Pinchas Goldstein ( he, פנחס גולדשטיין, born 26 August 1939, died 14 August 2007) was an Israeli politician, who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud and the New Liberal Party between 1981 and 1992, and as Deputy Minister of Communications and Deputy Minister of Education and Culture during the early 1990s. Miriam Glazer-Ta'asa ( he, מרים גלזר-תעסה, born 11 August 1929) is an Israeli former politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud between 1981 and 1988, and as Deputy Minister of Education and Culture from 1981 until 1984. Biography Miriam Ta'asa' was born in Yemen to a Mizrahi Jewish family and in 1929, Glazer-Ta'asa immigrated to the British Mandate of Palestine (now Israel) with her family in 1934. She grew up in the Neve Tzedek neighbourhood of Tel Aviv and attended the Talpiot Gymnasium. She joined the Irgun in 1945, later becoming an officer, and served in the IDF after Israeli independence. She went on to study at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, where she earned a bachelor's degree, and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where she earned a master's. Michael Dekel
Michael Dekel ( he, מיכאל דקל, 1 August 1920 – 20 September 1994) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Likud between 1977 and 1988. Biography Dekel was born in Pińsk, Poland (now in Belarus). During World War II he served in the Red Army between 1943 and 1944, and then the Polish Army from 1944 until 1946. After the war, he became commander of a Betar group in a Displaced Persons camp in Austria, and was also amongst the leaders of the Austrian Irgun branch. In 1949 he made aliyah to Israel. The following year he joined moshav Nordia, which had been founded by former Irgun members. He also became a member of the Herut party, and in 1966 became a member of its directorate and central committee.
